oooo that would be nice I've already written an essay on that!
Well, the woman who set the paper came in to teach us all the debates (since our sixth form had its hours cut and there was just no way we were going to finish the course) and she went on and on and on about free will and determinism. And she gave us exemplar essays about free will and determinism too and made us do essays. Compared to Nature vs Nurture where we hardly did anything on!

Really struggling with the concept of practical application part of the approaches and debates guys. Like can you use any practical application you like for example if i was discussing the biological approach can i mention that it is been applied to schizophrenia ? and how much depth do i go into this point would i say its the hypersensitivity of the dopamine rectors aswel as MZ twins have a higher co cordance for schiz and that drugs treatments have helped people? or do i just mention its been applied to the biological approach? and could i say another topic area in the same discussion for example phobias and explain how the biological approach describes phobias and also mention treatments ? any help welcomed and if anyone has any suggestions for practical applications they would also be welcomed thanks

Hi, for referring to topics and to ensure you get the best marks for them I would essentially state the topic clearly, then follow with a brief outline for example with the Biological approach, if you were using aggression, you could state how the approach would explain aggression and that it can be a result of high levels of the hormone testosterone. Then possibly state a quick study e.g. In a study involving prison inmates, those who had a higher level of testosterone had committed crimes of sex and violence as opposed to those who had lower levels and committed less serious crimes e.g burglaries. Then I would mention one strength and one weakness of the biological explanation for aggression. To get more AO2 marks, you could mention how another approach would explain it e.g SLT with Bandura's study
    Hope this helps!

For the cognitive approach you could use Memory e.g. Memory store model. Support it with Miller's digital span test and then evaluate the topic and also apply to back to the approach. You could also use gender development I.e. Kohlberg's and support it with evidence from Slaby and Frey's interview study along with comparing to another approach. For Humanistic, I'm not entirely sure however if it asked for a topic then I would say how it would explain depression compared to the biological approach - humanistic is holistic whereas biological is reductionist. Another topic could possibly be person centered therapy?

How would this be as a model for any 12 mark essay?

    AO1 (4) — Key features of approach/debate

    - Key feature 1
    - Key feature 2
    - Key feature 3
    - Key feature 4
    - Investigations using this approach

AO2 (8) — Strengths, Contributions and overall values of approach (+1 or more topics where these are evident)

    Strengths
    Contributions
    Overall value/ use
1 or more topics where evidence exists for the approach being useful

    Limitations
Defects — where it is unhelpful in understanding behaviour
Other approaches that could address these points
Topic to illustrate where this approach is unsuccessful

It's not completely necessary because you can gain marks elsewhere but it's good to learn a couple of small ones for each approach e.g. Soldiers found denial as a defence mechanism easier to cope with the prospect of death, millers digital span test for short term memory and men in prison had their saliva tested and those with higher levels of testosterone were more likely to commit crimes of sex and violence

    For my 12 mark essays:
Outline the four assumptions and also state if they are deterministic/reductionist/support nature and/or nurture and compare to other approaches

Outline two topics with a study, strength and weakness and compare to other approaches

Outline the interactionist approach and apply to question (if applicable)

Expermimental methods for the approach and compare along with therapy and general strengths and weaknesses

If you do a plan for each approach on each of these points you can save lots of time in the exam

do we think its fair to think psychology as a science won't be the 12 marker for debates?

Most likely it won't be, I wouldn't have minded it tbh, because most of us found it hard, our teacher when through it thoroughly

Does anyone know if for the A02 you have to include a topic such as schizophrenia or cog.development in the approaches question? or is it just comparing to other approaches that gets you extra A02
