Racist colleague, reported him
I work for a large employer and there are lots of people I only meet occasionally. One was a nice chap from Saudi Arabia and he was eager to share stories of how his country has changed since Western influences have arrived. That's fine, but then he started talking about why Northern Europeans dominated (and dominate) the world and advanced technologically while other populations (such as his own) remained at a near standstill.
He said that he thinks "we" have better brains and are inherently adjusted towards conquest and innovation, while his own people, he thinks, are slightly less intelligent and lack the motivation we have.
I ended the conversation there and went immediately to speak to someone higher up. They were busy but I arranged a meeting for tomorrow and I'm going to explain what he said and that they have a racist working in their organisation.
Should he be fired? I think it's disgusting what he said, especially as he's supposed to be a scientist and scientists should know that there are no biological differences between groups of people who evolved in relative isolation from each other and have completely different histories.
I feel uncomfortable working with him now. -
Re: Racist colleague, reported himWell it's his way of understanding things...........remember KSA isn't a very open society and you rarely get interaction between other groups of people.(Original post by NB_ide)

Re: Racist colleague, reported him(Original post by Zeb-)
whats actually racist about what he said or thinks?
Well firstly he thinks that the concept of race even makes sense, when it doesn't. It's just an imagined social construct.(Original post by Tackla)
What he said is not racist, that's just his opinions on the level of intellect of people from different regions.
Secondly, putting that aside, he's claiming that people from different races are physiologically different (whether by their brains or hormones or whatever) and that makes them think and behave differently, leading to the different cultures and ways of life they adopted. That is VERY racist. -
Re: Racist colleague, reported himand you are some sort of though-police, not taking into account 1400 years of standstill in every arab country?(Original post by NB_ide)

Re: Racist colleague, reported himNo, you're correct, people evolving separately for over 10,000 years are not physiologically different. At all. We are all exactly the same, always have been, always will be.(Original post by NB_ide)

Re: Racist colleague, reported himThis is not classed as being racism, he is actually saying good things about "Your" people.(Original post by NB_ide)

Re: Racist colleague, reported him**** Me you are dim, that was sarcasm on his part I hope.(Original post by NB_ide)
I'm glad someone else understands!
Race is not a social construct. That is not to say we should not all be treated equally, just people of different races are different. -
Re: Racist colleague, reported himSaying good things about one race relative to another is clearly just saying bad things about another race. Either way it's all racism.(Original post by bahjat93)
This is not classed as being racism, he is actually saying good things about "Your" people.
But if they're different then why should they be treated "equally"? That doesn't even make sense. Luckily they are THE SAME so can be treated as such!! !(Original post by IndyAM)

Re: Racist colleague, reported himIt was positive towards white Northern Europeans, and negative towards Saudis.(Original post by prog2djent)
"Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief"
What he said was positive, don't think it racist really.
And why can't racism be "positive", anyway. It's still racism. Otherwise describing a trait that some people like and some dislike would only be "racist" subjectively and half the time. It's racist to acknowledge and respect any difference between geographically distinct populations.
