Re: M94 - Greek collapse border closure Motion
I am glad that this topic has been raised in the House. I agree with the concerns raised in this bill, and as Home Secretary we are discussing possible options in the event of a financial meltdown in Europe; I shall make a full statement to the House on any action we take.
The Home Office is currently examining immigration trends from European countries that find themselves in poor financial situations. Although the EU is built to work as a single market that allows citizens to work in any of its nations, these rules can be abandoned in exceptional circumstances; I am not in a position to rule out this option at the moment, but neither am I able to select this as the first choice at this stage, which I believe is the aim of this motion. -

Disagree with the motion, any action like this would only serve to isolate us from Europe and we need all the buddies we can get. -
Re: M94 - Greek collapse border closure MotionYes, because unlike the last Government, when we take action on an issue, it is right that we come to the House and tell members what action we have taken so that we can be held account for it.(Original post by davidmarsh01)

But then again then Government that you lead did **** all anyway.... -

The only way we could really do this is if we left the EU first. In exceptional circumstances we would be able to close our borders to Europe without needing to leave. Obviously this would only be used as a last resort and I would not recommend this sort of action as the first choice in the event of a financial meltdown in Europe.(Original post by Moleman1996)
Whilst I agree somewhat with the principle (but would rather limit it than stop it), can we legally do this being a member of the EU? -
Re: M94 - Greek collapse border closure Motion
What are the immigrants going to do, Moussaka us to death? We already have huge levels of unemployment, their effect on wages would be negligible, and why the hell would they want to come here and not get a job anyway? If they leave the Euro, they'll replace it with a currency that's far more capable of competing internationally. It'll require they lower their effective pay, but they'd be doing that coming all the way here anyway.

Re: M94 - Greek collapse border closure MotionWhat happens if internetguru can speak Greek though?(Original post by thunder_chunky)
The name of this bill sucks by the way. This bill should be called The "It's all Greek to me" bill.

Re: M94 - Greek collapse border closure MotionYou can't take action. You're an online "government" that can physically take no action. By all means release a statement or bill (it would give rise for debate more so than a stupid statement, which is the aim of the MHoC) but a motion is just stupid and pointless.(Original post by Ham and Cheese)

Yes well you can play that card all you like, but I think you'll find when I replaced Dayne activity increased, and we were around the same level of the rest of the house. We actually released the same number of bills that term as the Tories so don't give me that. It seems that Tories IRL and on here seem to love the "you got us into this" card
Anyway, I'm going to terminate this conversation here, as it's just descending into bickering. Goodbye. -
Re: M94 - Greek collapse border closure Motion
No way.
What happens if migrants already here need to go home only temporarily?
If we break EU law once, why should we always do it whenever it is convenient?
What about the skilled immigrants from eastern europe?Last edited by TheHansa; 30-05-2012 at 18:12. -

if you don't like playing the game then by all means go away; no one is forcing you stay here.
Activity decreased and almost came to a standstill; since this Government took office we have produced far more bills than your Government ever did. Well it seems that Labour in both arenas always get us into a mess due to their incompetence! -
Re: M94 - Greek collapse border closure MotionI don't think statements are the way forward, Alex. Bills/motions stimulate more debate.(Original post by Ham and Cheese)
Yes David, it is a game

There was some activity before the current government, and it's not exactly my fault that there was very little activity in the house as a whole when I wasn't even leader.
