Westerns
Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

Westerns
I'm a big fan. If some of you have not seen any of these, you don't know what you're missing. They should make more of them. True Grit and 3:10 to Yuma were the only GREAT ones to come out since Unforgiven.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Unforgiven (1992)
3:10 to Yuma (2007)
True Grit (2010)
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
For a Few Dollars More (1965)
Tombstone (1993)
The Magnificent Seven (1960)
The Searchers (1956)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
Stagecoach (1939)
Red River (1948)Last edited by mali167; 30-05-2012 at 00:52. -
Re: Westerns
I think I enjoy The Proposition more than 3:10 and True Grit. Nick Cave needs to write more films. It's like Cormac McCacrthy in Australia (can definitely understand why the director was later brought in to direct The Road).
You also missed The Outlaw Josey Wales and Dead Man.
Also, Blood Meridian (McCarthy again) is finally being made into a film. If it's even half as good as the book it should be fantastic. -

I rate The Assassination of Jesse James as a modern Western classic. It's better than True Grit and 3:10 IMO.
I like it, and I always feel like I should see it as a really great film, because it just has that feel, but I think I'd put The Proposition over this also.
So much atmosphere. -
Re: WesternsYeah The Proposition was a decent film. There was this this one scene when Guy Pearce's character wakes up and one of those 3 Aboriginal Australians standing on top of a hill gets shot and his face is split to pieces. My brother said,''I'll take it he's not alive''. I'm not mocking the film but it was funny what he said.(Original post by concubine)

.
Seen The Outlaw Josey Wales. Didn't really like it. To each his own eh? I've not seen Dead Man. It says on IMDb that its supposed to be a fantasy/western. Not too keen on fantasy films. I'm afraid I'm just not gonna ''get'' it. -

Lonesome Dove
Not many people know about this one I guess. I've got it but not seen it yet. Its a mini series from 1989. Longer than 6 hours altogether. Rated pretty high on IMDb. -
Re: Westerns
It may be a TV show, but Deadwood does deserve some recognition too.Plus Hell on Wheels is also great too!
I highly recommend these show, to anyone who who wants to get into the Western genre.

Re: Westerns
my top 5 classic westerns, one per director, excluding those already mentioned:
My Darling Clementine (John Ford, 1946)
Vera Cruz (Robert Aldrich, 1954)
Rio Bravo (Howard Hawks, 1959)
Winchester '73 (Anthony Mann, 1950)
3:10 to Yuma (Delmer Daves, 1957)
NOTE: i'm not using classic as an adjective, 'classic western' refers specifically to the era 1939-1962 (Stagecoach to Liberty Valance)
