Westerns

Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

    Westerns
I'm a big fan. If some of you have not seen any of these, you don't know what you're missing. They should make more of them. True Grit and 3:10 to Yuma were the only GREAT ones to come out since Unforgiven.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
    Unforgiven (1992)
    3:10 to Yuma (2007)
    True Grit (2010)
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
For a Few Dollars More (1965)
    Tombstone (1993)
    The Magnificent Seven (1960)
    The Searchers (1956)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
    Stagecoach (1939)
    Red River (1948)

This is quite an obvious list, but a good starting point, I guess. I'm not sure they should make more of them, revisionist westerns can be great (you forgot The Proposition, BTW), but as a genre it's said the most it can say, IMO.

I think I enjoy The Proposition more than 3:10 and True Grit. Nick Cave needs to write more films. It's like Cormac McCacrthy in Australia (can definitely understand why the director was later brought in to direct The Road).

You also missed The Outlaw Josey Wales and Dead Man.

Also, Blood Meridian (McCarthy again) is finally being made into a film. If it's even half as good as the book it should be fantastic.

I rate The Assassination of Jesse James as a modern Western classic. It's better than True Grit and 3:10 IMO.

I watched Cowboys and Aliens yesterday. It was a decent action flick. It has a strong Western element but it's difficult to class a genre-mashing film like this as a Western.

I like it, and I always feel like I should see it as a really great film, because it just has that feel, but I think I'd put The Proposition over this also.

    So much atmosphere.

    .
Yeah The Proposition was a decent film. There was this this one scene when Guy Pearce's character wakes up and one of those 3 Aboriginal Australians standing on top of a hill gets shot and his face is split to pieces. My brother said,''I'll take it he's not alive''. I'm not mocking the film but it was funny what he said.

Seen The Outlaw Josey Wales. Didn't really like it. To each his own eh? I've not seen Dead Man. It says on IMDb that its supposed to be a fantasy/western. Not too keen on fantasy films. I'm afraid I'm just not gonna ''get'' it.

I really got into Westerns last summer, but I watched so many of them they blurred a bit in my mind. The ones that really stood out were The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Ox-Bow Incident. I'm definitely more into the character based ones than the action based films.

Watched Unforgiven again last night. Enjoyed it.

I haven't seen The Wild Bunch so hopefully get round to that soon. It's been on my Lovefilm list forever.

I adore Westerns. I recently watched one of my favorites, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I highly recommend this film to anyone, who would want to get into this fantastic genre.

    Lonesome Dove

Not many people know about this one I guess. I've got it but not seen it yet. Its a mini series from 1989. Longer than 6 hours altogether. Rated pretty high on IMDb.

Johnny Guitar is a pretty good western from Nicholas Ray that's well worth watching. Man of the West is another great one, with a superb performance from Gary Cooper.

    Re: Westerns
my top 5 classic westerns, one per director, excluding those already mentioned:
My Darling Clementine (John Ford, 1946)
    Vera Cruz (Robert Aldrich, 1954)
    Rio Bravo (Howard Hawks, 1959)
    Winchester '73 (Anthony Mann, 1950)
3:10 to Yuma (Delmer Daves, 1957)

NOTE: i'm not using classic as an adjective, 'classic western' refers specifically to the era 1939-1962 (Stagecoach to Liberty Valance)

El Topo is the best western I've ever seen. A must.
