Re: GCSE Business Studies Unit 2 30th May?
AQA business studies Unit 2 is at 9am tommorow.
I'm hoping for generic questions to come up where common sense can be used, if the questions are really specific, I'll be slightly unprepared. I also hope for maths questions, they are just free marks. (Unit 1 last week told you to times 150 by 4 to get 2 marks I think).
The best tip is to always find a way to relate your answers to the scenario. They always give out clues to what you should write. Exam reports also always praise answers that relate/are more specific to the scenario. -

How did you find the exam?
I thought a lot of the questions were obscure and not every business related. I'm not a fire sfaety expert, and asking us to speculate on why unbranded mouse mats are in low demand? And then how to improve them?!
Nothing about operations management at all. Nothing on marketing. Little on finance.
And for the JIT 9 marker at the end, I found my class got confused between:
Stock Control (The sharp-teeth like graph where you order stock in at certain points)
and JIT Production (Getting parts in just in time for production, reduced warehouse costs).
I went with JIT Production, others talked about stock control. Who was right?
Overall, the questions were okay, I knew the stuff but some of them were pointless, not relevant to business etc! -

Hi AboveTheLine,
I thought the paper was easy enough but there was some stupid questions like the PP Ltd. mousemat or whatever. What did you write about this? I wrote that people are requiring more portable methods of computing therefore there wasn't a need for mouse mats (i.e; laptops, tablets). I also wrote that because there are new mouse technologies such as laser and optical mouses which could be used on any surfaces, demand for mouse pads are decreasing.
Thanks a lot. -
Re: AQA Business Studies Unit 2 (GCSE) 30th May 2012
I also thought the first question was a bit awkward. As far as the mousemats are concerned, i also talked about the fact more people have laptops in recent times. I then noticed a section about the fact it was in the decline phase of the product life cycle and interpreted this to mean that competitors may have launched products that are out competing PPs mousemats. Along with this, i made note of the fact that the mousemats are probably not being highly promoted compared to PPs other products, again as it is in the decline phase. The first nine mark question was highly strange - i chose to reccomend the customer questionnaire as it is more likely to be honest and provides a larger quantity of information. I was most confident on the second of the nine mark questions as i had plently of points and the case study provided a huge amount of help on that one.
As for the question about whether or not the shower company should use JIT, i advised against it - referencing ideas relating to stock control. JIT revolves around having supplies delivered just as they are needed in production and i noted that this requires a high level of coordination with suppliers (a feat that would ultimately be challenging for a company who are supplied by several suppliers. -

I decided to choose China as they could recieve rent for offices close to the factory at no cost. I compared this to the UK where possibly the only thing close to this would be a subsidised government grant.
I also said that wages in the United Kingdom are expected to be higher than those in China therefore they can pay staff less whilst producing the same/more output of products.
I said about transport and distribution for an advantage to locating in the UK and how customers would expect fast delivery of items. If it was sent from China - it would be 10 days+ to recieve such personalised goods and that the costs of transport would be high. -

Very much agreed. I thought it was quite difficult to answer those questions. I was expecting adv/disadv of converting to a ltd from a plc because thats what was on the past papers so i revised that and then it didnt come up. And you were right with JIT

What did people get for the disadvantage of flow production? I said something about it being quite boring and repetative doing things in a standardised way, which could cause the workers to become demotivated blah blah blah, or something along those lines
xo

I also put something like this - flow usually works best with specialisation (as was the case in the case study) and this leads to workers doing same task day-to-day, causing de-motivation. Workers may leave and the business may have to spend on recruitment.(Original post by ClungeCatcher)

I hope were both right!
