Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(
Hi everyone. I know that some of you will be rolling your eyes at this, but if anyone could help me out and bear with me, I'd be grateful.
Basically, yesterday I finished the final year of my degree, and given I've already received my marks for English Literature (my modules this year were 100% essay based, and most of them were at 65%/66%) I only have to receive my Spanish results, and so I'll be getting my final results next Monday. I know I should be absolutely ecstatic and over the moon right now, but something's really bugging me. Although generally I've had good marks throughout my degree, in my second year of Uni, I was seriously ill for my second semester. As a result I actually failed one of my English Literature modules pretty badly - I got a pitiful 15% (!!!), and was made to retake the module. When I got the results from my retake, I was told that if I did as well I did then in my exam, I'd have got a 1st - but the problem is that, given my medical notes weren't "sufficient" evidence to prove how ill I was, even though I was allowed to retake the module completely, I was capped at 40%. No amount of protesting has made them budge so far.
I still haven't entirely recovered, and nor do the doctors know exactly what's wrong with me, but this year I've realised that, because of this mark, I'd have to average in at about 65% just to scrape a 2:1... so I've knuckled down. I've been getting marks all over the place this year - from 79% to 58% - so even though I've put lots of effort in to make up for this, I've got a really nasty feeling that when I get my results next week, I'll have got something like 59% overall
So, I know that today isn't results day yet for me yet, but I was wondering if any of you guys knew the steps I should take if this comes to pass. I understand that if I get something like 55% overall, there's not a lot I can do, and if that happens, I'll happily take the 2:2...but if I'm right on that borderline... urgh. I don't know what to do.
I'm really sorry about this guys. I know a 2:2 isn't a bad grade at all. I'm just genuinely worried that the module I failed will drag me down.

Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(
There is nothing you can do in terms of getting the module mark uncapped however, what if you were to retake a year with just that module? That way you can repeat the module (whilst attending lectures) and take the assignments/exams allowing you to achieve higher grade than the pass mark. I don't know if you could do that though, your best bet is to ask someone at university.
What university and degree? -
Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(Bangor University, with a 4 year BA in English Literature and Spanish. I've already asked my tutors from each department about this, and they both seem to be saying different things... for example, my English tutor has told me that this isn't possible and all marks are final, even if I get 59.9%. Nevertheless, my Spanish lecturer is saying that my grade will be "bumped up" if I get 58% or above. I'm just confused, because I desperately want a straight answer from somebody and I don't know where to get it from.(Original post by pinda.college)

By the way, thank you for the idea about resitting the module in another year. I might try that. The only problem I might have is that I took it two years ago, and it hasn't run since...so I'm not exactly feeling hopeful.

Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(It really is. Anyone who says otherwise is delusional. Congrats on not getting one btw.(Original post by Lamperouge)

Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(I personally disagree, since you can definitely get worse than a 2:2... I know that the five people who failed their degrees in Spanish today would have probably killed to get one! And it's not like they're stupid, or didn't make the effort...(Original post by DynamicSyngery)

Thank you all, by the way. I really wouldn't have argued if I got a mid 2:2 or something like that, but I know I would have let myself down if I did get one. I'd have definitely cried, that's for sure! Well, in any case, I certainly don't want to swap now! I like my 2:1

Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(It probably is. You know, a 2:2 you can be unlucky. A third and you've either got serious problems in your life or you're bone idle. A fail? Just naw.(Original post by Lamperouge)

Also, bloody good job yourself. -
Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(
Congrats on the 2.1
Just to clear up the issue as to whether a 58% will be bumped up in case anyone else is wondering:
If you are within 2% of a class boundary (eg between 58.00% and 59.99%) then if the preponderance of your modules are above the boundary (60%) the examiners can award you the higher class (in this case a 2.1). So, given an overall average in the critical range, the fact that the average is being forced down by one a typically low mark will work in your favour. -
Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(It's University dependant, so I'm not sure you can be that prescriptive.(Original post by xela)

Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(A valid point, sorry if I was unclear(Original post by Norton1)

the 'bumping up' is down to the department and their policy on the matter. They do of course keep autonomy in decision making, I was just pointing out common practice.

Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(I'm not sure a 2.2 is much better than failing. It still excludes you from all the grad schemes, and in a language probably means you aren't fluent anyway. In fact a big advantage of failing is that you can do a second OU degree and blame it all on illness or something.(Original post by Lamperouge)

Well. It's fine unless you're looking to go into a graduate job that requires, as a minimum, a 2:1, sure, it beats failing. -
Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(Which is pretty much every job that requires a degree. A 2.2 is strictly worse than not having gone to university - 3 years work experience even in the worst job is much better - a fail is similarly bad but you can at least start again.(Original post by concubine)

Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(
There are some seriously ignorant people on this thread! a 2.1 is good, and 2.2 is not bad... but to say a 2.2 is the worst thing that can happen is simply ridiculous !! I think there are too many opinionated kids on here who have no experience of the real world and are just listening to what their mummy and daddy are telling them

Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(Agree, the only reason a 2:2 is considered bad is because its the average, as long as you can back up your 2:2 as to why your better than anybody else then I don't see a problem with it. A degree is a degree at the end of the day.(Original post by cozman1)

Re: Might have slipped into a 2:2 :(At my university I got a 3rd (referred) that meant I was also on the borderline I took the resit (it was optional) and got my 2:2 good luck Oh and also a 2:2 is not bad and you can get on some grad schemes with one (PGCE which i applied for then changed my mind case in point)(Original post by Lamperouge)
