Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)My housemate does env. science(Original post by chlooeh)
Hi, I'm doing Environmental Science which shares some modules I think
Do you have any information on Environmental Science?x
so yeah could probably get a lot of info for you
anything in particular?
-
Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)Well, it sounds a bit stupid but I'd just like to know how hard the course really is.. no one ever talks about the work at uni!(Original post by sophiemayne)
My housemate does env. science

And whether the small class sizes are beneficial?
And also just generally how interesting the course is, how nice the staff are and how different the people are on the course?
Thanks! x -
Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)Nah i know what you mean, it's all about the social life and accommodation and things like that. Well you can get a pretty good idea of the work just by looking at the course outline from the dept. website. But she said that it is pretty hard, but it depends on which part of the course you are interested in and which parts come naturally to you...she suggested having a look at the book 'Nature and Properties of soil - NC Brady', she said that's a core text book for the course. The small class sizes are always beneficial, I have a pretty small group for most of my lectures, and it means you can build good friendship groups up really easily, my house mate thinks its good for when you go on field trips and stuff as well, as you all get along so much better. I would also say that because of the small class size, then everyone is pretty similar in interests and what they want to do, that's the case in my course anyway(Original post by chlooeh)

She said that the staff are really keen to help, but you have to put in the effort, which is pretty standard for uni tbh. Her name is Anna by the way, you will probably meet her at some point next year
not sure what else I can say...basically...if you have a proper interest for the course, then you will enjoy it
just put in the effort lol x

Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)
Hey
I'm only just starting year 13, and am interested in environment and physical side of geography. I'm thinking of taking environmental geography at york uni, but other than that im unsure of which courses i want to take. I have thought about taking meteorology before, as i have a big interest in natural hazards e.g tornadoes and hurricanes etc, as well as climate change and pollution. However, every met course I seem to find explains how i must have maths skills and there seem to be a lot of math calculations out there in that field. I was just wondering if you are interested in maths stuff, and if you really do a load of calculations etc?
I dont know about you but i find maths such a pain to understand! I dont take it for a level. -
Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)Sorry to break this to you but it's pretty much all maths! Off the top of my head, we did 7 modules and only two didn't involve maths. The maths gets less and less as you go through the years, but only because you have built up the foundation in A level and in the first 2 years really. I didn't do maths or physics at A level, and was told I couldn't do the course. So I had to do a foundation year which is A level standard in order to be able to. No one on my course 'loves' the maths involved, so you have to have a real passion for the subject to get past revising for things that at the time, seem irrelevant to tornadoes! We had to do Calculus, Vectors, Ordinary Differential Equations and a maths based Meteorology Topic (which was harder than then maths in the other modules). So I won't pretend, it's very maths intensive and A level is pretty much a must.(Original post by Ellie_May :))

I'm the same...I hated maths. But when it's applied to something that I love, it became more bearable

Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)Ok, thankyou very much for that info(Original post by sophiemayne)

I think I'll stick to my geography and environment degrees!
Thanks again

Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)Brilliant! Well done(Original post by Cyclo)
It looks like I have met my offer to study the three year meteorology degree
Just need to go and collect my Access to He certificate and then email it over to the relevant admissions people.
Is this in Reading uni or elsewhere?

Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)Ahhh as soon as I read that I thought it was probably someone Trevor has mentioned(Original post by Cyclo)
Thanks
It is indeed. Hunt me down
You may know a guy. I think he'll be in your year now. We went storm chasing in the US last year. His name is Trevor and I think he's around 29 now.
Are you on facebook? If you want, send me a message with your name/facebook details and I will add you to a group so you can see who else you'll have to put up with this year :P

Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)I don't have it i'm afraid. Got fed up after myspace and gone back to being old fashioned.(Original post by sophiemayne)

I'll just turn up wearing. Should be easy to make friends
Which course are you doing ? The 3 or 4 year one. -
Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)Haha, please please please turn up wearing that. I have an awesome cloud t shirt, I'll wear that so you feel more comfortable :P Near the beginning of last year, one of mine and Trevs coursemates turned up just in a towel, so it gets worse :P I'm on the 4 year course, so off to America with Trevor. He is all too aware of what he is letting himself in for(Original post by Cyclo)

Where are you from by the way?

Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)I am tempted lol. The met office have an epic clothing range out that I may just have to raid before I start. Yeah, that'd be great to see. You'll recognise me as I have a snowflake tattoo on my left arm lol Turned up in just a towel ? ha ha. Well I only have a flannel(Original post by sophiemayne)

I'm sooo jealous of you all going to Oklahoma. Would love to have had the opportunity. To be fair, I would not be in any lectures during the spring and summer as I would be out chasing everyday lol.
Rugby, Warks. It's about an hour and a half drive from the uni. Not too bad.Last edited by Cyclo; 09-07-2012 at 22:03. -
Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)I could have sworn I replied to this...I am officially going mad :/ Ahh I will eventually get round to having my cloud tattoo, just need to find a bit of spare money (easier said than done!). Ahh there is always a chance you could end up going, there are usually spare places, but they decide whether to fill them or not at a later date I think. You'll recognise me because I tend to have blonde hair that looks like a lions mane :| think I would rather the tattoo lol.(Original post by Cyclo)

Ahh that isn't too bad, I'm from Wales. Can do the journey in 2 ish hours. -
Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)
I originally applied to the Bsc Met & Climate but declined my offers as I've decided to go for a more general undergraduate degree (Geography) and take a gap year, but I hope to come back afterwards to do a postgraduate degree or something. So I'll hopefully be there eventually..!

Re: Any Meteorology hopefuls out there?! :)I completed my BSc in Physics with Astrophysics in 2009, so am in pretty good stead for it! Was going through the course modules today, bit giddy with excitement! It's pretty much what I've always wanted to do. I've got so many questions, but will have to wait for this visit they've invited me and the other postgrads to at the end of the month.(Original post by sophiemayne)
Good to hear!
Have you done Met previously or did you do a different degree/qualification before?
So come say hi!
I actually can't wait.
