UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA Physics 3 GCSE - May 30 2012
Physics exam discussion - share revision tips in preparation for GCSE, A Level and other physics exams and discuss how they went afterwards.

Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA Physics 3 GCSE - May 30 2012True, but then this paper was harder; only time will tell.(Original post by Juxtap0sed)
But you have to bear in mind 2008 was the first year of this specification so no one knew quite what to expect, hence lower boundaries :/

Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA Physics 3 GCSE - May 30 2012
This is my first post on TSR!!! YAAAY but anyway- i literally died during that physics exam- it was soooooo difficukt- but according to the mark scheme i think i'll get about 29 is this atleast a B cause i'm reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllly scared i'll get a C - i realllllly hope i dont but would about 29-31 be a C?????

Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA Physics 3 GCSE - May 30 2012I actually dont think so, because it was only one mark, so i think "there's is no more hydrogen left" is sufficient.(Original post by letsbehonest)
Based on this .. I got 37
Is nuclear fusion reallllllllly needed to get the mark blergh annoying -
Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA Physics 3 GCSE - May 30 2012Sometimes they do the rule of "right+wrong = wrong" so i dont know...(Original post by Maisie10)
also in 8a i'd had a complete (stupid) mindblank and couldnt remember if it was hydrogen or helium, so i put both
do you think they would they accept it as i did mention hydrogen runs out so no nuclear fusion cant take place, however i did say helium as well!

Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA Physics 3 GCSE - May 30 2012I swear they said that every year...(Original post by steviep14)
Well AQA are thought to be raising boundaries this year so we don't know if they are and by how much..
Nobody really knows -
I think I did too(Original post by sp08)
For 1f) I put 'as the speed in (m/s) increases the centripetal force increases' would I get the marks?
I rushed it

Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA Physics 3 GCSE - May 30 2012No, it said that the sattelite went round the earth TWICE in 24 hours, therefore it wouldnt be staying in the same position over the earth (it is orbiting faster than the earth) and so it is not geostationary, even if it was orbiting over the equator (which i dont think it was anyway).(Original post by katiehackett)
Yeah, it also said 24 hours so it must be geostationary...I think he got that wrong? -
Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA Physics 3 GCSE - May 30 2012
Q1 - Circular Motion
1a) Towards the centre of the circle (1)
1b) I wrote three - length of string, mass of bung and speed (1)
1c) Any TWO from: experiment only valid if one independent variable, no comparison can be made with results (2)
1d) Eliminate any anomalous results (1)
1e) Only put one down (1)
1f) The bigger the centripetal force, the faster the speed needed to keep it moving in a circle (1)
Q2 - Centre of Mass
2a)
- Hanging card by holes
- Placing Plumbline on the card (to find the centre of mass)
- Drawing line along the piece of string of the plumbline
- where lines meet is centre of mass, draw on third line (3)
2b) - Balance shape where lines meet is centre of mass if it stays still, draw more lines (2)
Q3 - Satellites
3a) Gravity (1)
3b) No
- Geostationary only have one orbit whereas this had two (2)
Q4 - Motor Effect
4a)
- When the switch is closed, current flows
- The wire experiences a force when a current flows in a magnetic field an movement occurs (2)
4b) The Motor Effect (1)
4c) The wires direction of movement would be reversed but not very fast (2)
4e)0.006 recurring N (2) - used the distance from pivot minus 2 instead of 8
Q5 - Sound
5a) Same amplitude(1)
5b) Different Waveform (1)
5c) The amplitude (1)
5d)
- The lady cannot hear below 50dB, hearing aid will increase the volume that she can hear
- The essential speaking range = 500-2000Hz (2)
5e) Did this wrong (1)
5f) Because it can damage their hearing (1)
5g) Because in the hall the sound will reflect off the walls meaning more of the sound is heard (1)
Q6 - Transformers
6a) Step Up (1)
6b) More Coils on Secondary Coil than Primary Coil (1)
6c) Iron is magnetic (magnetises) (1)
6d) 60 Turns (2)
Q7 - Lenses
7a) Diverging lens (1)
7b) Any THREE From:
- Drew horizontal but refracting wrong way when hitting perpendicular line(lens)
- Drew line through lens
- lines did meet at magnification halfway but not dotted (3)
7c) 0.93 because I measured my image height etc. however image was in inverted position due to wrong lines
7d) ONE from:
- Lines dotted and appear upright which do not pass through lens (1)
Q8 - Life of a Star
8a) The Star runs out of Hydrogen fuel, preventing nuclear fusion (1)
8b) Any THREE from:
- The star expands to form a Red Giant
- The Red Giant then turns into a White Dwarf
- no more light is given out as star remains dull
(I did however say that if it was larger mass than sun then supernova would occur, so I don't know ow many marks I would lose) (3)
Thanks, I would appreciate it if somebody could mark this and let me know what you think I am likely to get out of 45. Please be honest. -
Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA Physics 3 GCSE - May 30 2012Lol I got an A in physics GCSE(Original post by Loiks94)
anybody got the official mark scheme and grade boundaries for these?
oh the days when you didn't have to revise.
have to say physics A level is the hardest thing ever :'( -
Re: UNOFFICIAL MARK SCHEME - AQA Physics 3 GCSE - May 30 2012Lol I got an A* in Physics at GCSE and I'd have to agree As Physics OCR is very hard, just started it and it is by far the hardest out of Biology, Chemistry and Maths..(Original post by adamsharif)
