Sikhs protest outside Luton Police station over ‘assault’ allegations

    Published on Wednesday 30 May 2012 09:..47

HUNDREDS of members of the Sikh community protested outside Luton Police Station last night following allegations that a young woman had been sexually assaulted.

Scores of Sikh men and women converged on the Buxton Road station at around 9pm after the allegations were made following an incident on Monday.

Protestors, many of them from outside of Luton, blocked one side of Stuart Street with concerns over police handling of the incident.

Several English Defence League supporters joined the Sikhs in protest.

Representatives from the Sikh community were invited into the police station to discuss their concerns, but police, some with police dogs, eventually guarded the entrance to the station and herded protestors away from Buxton Road.

The group were eventually escorted back to the Dallow Road temple and eventually dispersed before midnight.

Police had met with members of the community at the Gurdwara in Dallow Road earlier in the day to address their concerns.

Officers say that they are continuing to work with members of the community to ensure that they are kept up-to-date.

Beds Police Chief Supt Mike Colbourne said: “Obviously we have a duty to facilitate lawful, peaceful protest and if people have concerns it is right they are aired responsibly. Our priority first and foremost, however, is with the victim in this matter and her family.”

A man has since been charged with common assault following the incident and will appear at Luton Magistrates Court this morning.

Not really liking the insinuation that the Sikhs are aligned with the EDL.

Not really liking the insinuation that the Sikhs are aligned with the EDL.
    Why?

The Sikh community who organised the protest got in touch with the EDL specifically and asked them to attend.

The EDL are not a racist organisation despite what the clueless, mindless fools on the left say.

I still think they're retarded. If I protested outside a police station every time one of my European/English brothers was assaulted I honestly would not have a life.

Sikh's weren't protesting against all muslims - this must be said. They were protesting against radical muslims and anybody who advocates sexually assaulting a young female, from their community. Very sensible messages regarding our stance:

"They further added, "We are do not consider Muslims as our enemies. It would go against our religion to do so. We respect all communities and religions. However, the Pakistani Muslim community needs to acknowledge and address they have a problem with their youth and that systematic grooming of young non-Muslims girls is happening throughout the UK."

"I personally did not welcome their (English Defence League) presence. Obviously they wanted to make hay of this because it's their town. Some of the young boys were very angry and welcomed them but I'm not happy. Our values do not match."

"the EDL had not been invited as had initially been claimed."

"Although no one invited the English Defense League (EDL), some of their supporters joined the Sikhs in protest."

    Why is that proof?
That's one EDL member out of thousands who is a bit of an idiot. So the actions of one person reflect on the group as a whole do they?

Does that mean that all black people are criminals because of a few bad eggs?

You need to open your mind and stop making judgements on the actions of one individual.

@S23a: There's a popular Sikh forum where it's mentioned numerus times that the EDL were invited by the Sikhs. If the Sikhs didn't want the EDL there then why didn't they tell them to go away? Fact is, the EDL are not racist, as evidenced by the show of support for Sikhs, the show of support for Pakistani Christians (at two demos I attended EDL members did a collection for a Pakistano Christian imprisoned in Pakistan) and show support for Jews.

They have a number of black members, two Sikhs amongst their leadership, Jews in their leadership etc.

lol why are you randomly using black people as an example?... stupid statement. And when you say I need to open up my mind, open it up to allow racism, thuggery and hooligan behaviour. no thanks

And btw I never said the EDL were racist- I said SOME of them are, and thats clear from seeing them in Luton, the majority just have an extreme fear of England becoming Islamic- which in itself is ridiculous

Also the EDL isn't really a political party is it. It is really concerned with England, keeping it white, keeping it the way it is. If this wasn't the case then the 'English defence' idea wouldn't exist in the first place!

So either members are plain racist, or they feel frustrated because they feel that English culture is being taken over which is just plain stupid, therefore EDL= either racist or stupid

EDL are only concered about English culture and what they feel is happening to England. Sikhs however, protest about what they as a community think is right. This isn't the first instance of Sikhs protesting against actions done by other people. In India, at this very monet, people are protesting to prevent a man from being hanged (he has the death sentence). He was supposed to be hanged in March but he is still alive. Why is he being hanged? He is the only person alive involved in a massacre in 1984. He is only being hung so the government can act as if the are finally closing the case; the Indian government are corrupt but can effected by the public.

Does the mainstream media have a policy of not reporting stuff like this? Never see anything about EDL on BBC unless its some cringy documentary.

I know that one of the Sikh members has been expelled from the Sikh religion but I do not know anything about the others

Lol, women are assaulted every day by different people, carry on protesting

Also guessing they don't have an advisor, the moment EDL came next to their name, their chances of being taken seriously disappeared.

The EDL's were here for a different reason to the Sikhs.
And i'm sure the Sikhs are not against every single muslim, because of the one man.
Whereas the EDL would blame every single muslim for such an act.

What do you mean? A non-violent protest sounds pretty much exactly what us Sikhs do.

Ugh, the way you're portraying information to fit your own agenda is annoying.

As the news spread, a meeting was called in Luton Gurdwara to talk about this issue. This meeting was attended by other non-sikh residents of Luton as well who were also concerned after hearing the news. This included community interfaith workers, some business people, media, police and 2 local members of the EDL - ALL of which were NOT officially invited by neither the Gurdwara nor the SAS, they all sat silently throughout the meeting.

This was an INFORMAL get together to share concerns, organised within a few hours of the news breaking.

    Protest:
Members of the Sangat themselves stood up and said the police are failing to protect our youth. The Sangat themselves suggested to march to the police station which is about 10 mins walk from the gurdwara to raise their concerns.

NO PROTEST was organised, it was completely spontaneous. the 2 EDL members were not known to the Gurdwara committee nor to 99% of the sangat, who assumed they were sympathizers from a non-sikh background. They did not raise any concerns and were not vocal.

The protest was heated but remained peaceful as the frustration of the sangat came through.

It represented a very large percentage of luton's modest sikh community.
