History or law?
This is really difficult when you're interested in two subjects and a joint honours is not something I'm willing to do.
Basically, history is my passion definitely and always has been, always will be probably but I really don't know what I'd do with it and I don't want to come out of university with a degree I cannot really use.
Law, on the other hand, is something I feel is probably more respected by employers but how do I know if I'll enjoy it? I think it look very interesting but I'm scared I'm going to regret it and wish I did history.
Can anyone help me, please? Thank you -
Re: History or law?
Law degree, you go into Law. History degree opens countless possibilities, one of which being Law. Why not go with your passion that could manifest itself into numerous rewarding, well paid and challenging jobs? You could find yourself further extending your love of history into something much more specific, you could get on a GDL and into a law firm, you could be in finance, investment, journalism, politics, any number of positions.
I'm starting a history degree in September so could be a little biased :PLast edited by Pitt1988; 30-05-2012 at 19:14. -
Re: History or law?A Law degree opens up the same generic opportunities opened up by History. With a Law degree you can go into investment, journalism, politics as you specified, just like you can with History. Going into Law just seems like a natural progression for many people, which is why you make 'Law degree, you go into Law'. The pool of Law graduates is saturated, but it is also saturated for Arts subject graduates, which is something people conveniently forget. In short, it is a complete myth, that a History degree opens up more opportunities than a Law degree.(Original post by Pitt1988)

Saying that, the OP should do History based on their circumstances. -
Re: History or law?
If you are planning to be a lawyer, law degree will save you 1 extra year of Legal Practice Course.
It's not just what degree, which uni and the result of your choosen degree are also important. You won't get into large corporation without a 2:1. Think carefully. Min. requirement applying for a master degree is 2:1.
If you are passionate about history, go for it. -
