Best facewash (Male)
Hi, whats the best facewash for a guy? Blackhead, exfoliating etc dont really know the difference?
Used to have acne but its calmed down recently, the cream the doc gave me dries out my skin, got a few blackheads, mainly on my nose but it doesnt work on them.
Iv tried a few like clean and clear etc, what would you reccommend is the best? -
Re: Best facewash (Male)
It's not really gender-dependent to be honest, it's more skin-type dependent. You say your skin is dry due to acne cream your doctor gave you, I'm going to assume it's Quinoderm or PanOxyl BP cream. It's worth noting that eventually the dryness as a result of this will go away, but in the meantime, you need to think about getting a moisturiser. A simple no-frills one like Olay Beauty Fluid Sensitive will do. Apply it after your acne cream has sunk in.
An exfoliator is usually a scrub that has little beads in it that lift away dirt but also dry and flaky skin. You should use an exfoliator once a week, I like St Ives Blemish Fighting Apricot Scrub, it's about £4 in Boots and lasts ages!
For a cleanser, you need something less harsh. Unfortunately with cleansers, it can take ages until you find one that is a fit for you. If you're worried about blackheads, look for cleansers that say they are for blackheads but a good cleanser should deal with them anyway. You could look into something like a foaming cleanser. I use Body Shop Aloe Gentle Face Wash which is £7 usually, but I got it on 40% off. I used to use Botanics Sensitive Cleansing Foam but it got discontinued recently, but if you see it in Boots, it's brilliant!
Hope this helped a bit, if you have any more questions, just ask! -
Re: Best facewash (Male)
I know its not so much gender dependant, but being a guy i dont know the difference between exfoliater etc haha.
Its retin-a gel, quite strong stuff from the dermatoligist.
Usually to use before bed.
But once i wash my face in the morning its usually really dry after half an hour, i then put some e45 on but it just repeats its self because the gel dries my skin.
Im using a nutrogina exfoliating one, its a daily wash thats meant to get rid of blackheads but its had no effect at all, ill have a proper look in boots -

Exfoliators basically take the dead skin off, leaving your face soft like a baby's bottom.
E45 doesn't work for me. Nivea moisturisers are great, and I really like Simple too. Simples do a clear skin oil balancing moisturiser that you could try, it's in a white and blue bottle.
Neutrogena do a really good grapefruit scrub. It couldn't look any more feminine to be honest haha (it's in a pink bottle with little exfoliating crystals), but it is really, really good, so don't let that put you off!
Clearasil's pore cleansing pads are really good if you haven't tried those. Don't get them near your eyes though, they might as well be 100% alcohol.Last edited by sammy-lou; 01-06-2012 at 00:01. -
Re: Best facewash (Male)
Thanks for the replies
Not to keen on getting the neutrogena one, using one now and it seems to have no difference at all!
The St Ives scrub people are saying theres a few different ones, theres a blemish fighting, invigorating and then just a gental one.
(im looking on the boots website, its on offer too)
Which one is the best to go for? -
Re: Best facewash (Male)I am a huge fan of Peter Thomas Roth although it is mainly for Acne what I use it for (preventing it before it happens never hurts(Original post by Waki)

) but if you go through their site you should find the combination of Cleanser, Exfoliator, Toner and Moisturiser that suits your goal... they don't ship to the UK from their site but Just Us Men sell their products within the UK

My boyfriend uses the same acne cream as you! He always complained of uncomfortably dry skin as well.
I know his regime at the minute is the Freederm exfoliating wash, rinsed of really well followed by clean and clean blackhead cleanser (in the purple bottle and you don't wash it off) and then with savlon on any dry areas on top. Savlon works for him because it's antibacterial so it heals the spot, combats dryness and stops any spots from reoccurring
hope this helps!
