    Do you tip waiters/waitresses?
I don't because I don't see the reason to when they're getting paid to serve me plus I work in a low paid job and no one tips me.

They often get paid an extremely low wage because they're expected to make money in tips. I don't tip if I get bad service, or if I've only spent a couple of quid, but anything more and I'd usually leave at least a small tip.

Often no. I've done a bit of waitressing myself and never expect to be tipped, but it really is appreciated when someone decides to tip.

Personally I only tip if I particularly notice that they have done an exceptional job, and they seem genuine about this and not just doing it in the hope to get more money

I usually try and leave the standard 10%, unless I'm feeling particularly cash-strapped. That said, if the service is bad or too slow, no tip :nah:

They get paid by their employer. That's it. Don't like the low wage, quit jobs and change industry. I've never tipped. You pay for a service and that's it, if you want to tip, go for it. But an EXPECTATION to tip, ppffft.

Never. This country has a minimum wage for a reason. Even if it didn't, I wouldn't tip. Tipping is just a way for the company to pay a lower wage, and pass more of the costs onto the consumer.

Servers have an easy job compared to some people we would never consider tipping - cleaners, labourers, etc.

Anyone who says they need tips because their wage is so low is wrong. Firstly, this is illegal in the UK. Secondly, wages are low BECAUSE people tip.

No, I'm worse off than most of them tbh. If the service was particularly good I'd consider it.

I don't really think that tipping someone just because they get paid less to balance out the pay (which is now illegal in this country if you go below the minimum wage) is helpful, as it just encourages the employer to keep doing it.

Anyway, nobody ever tipped me when I worked in McDonald's :cry2:

This might be a completely bizarre thing to do, but when my family stay in a hotel for example, or hire people to do stuff to the house, if the workers seem polite (cleaner, waiter, electrician, whatever) we generally leave a tip. Especially on holiday, my dad tends to just distribute leftover euros to all the staff that've done anything for us.

This. But no, I don't tip, I'm a poor student and the few money left over goes to charity.

Not unless I've noticed that they've put an extraordinary effort in

(which is most likely as I'm unable to tip them )

Depends on how much change I have and how good the service was. I have a few friends who look down on waiters/waitresses and look down on me even more if I want to tip them, but at the end of the day if I think they've done a good job I'll give them a tip.

I give a tip if the service was good. Poor service, no tip.

You may not see a reason, but its out of appreciation, you pay the bill and if you like it, you tip.

I will always tip because I work as a waiter and appreciate tips myself.

Me, parents, sister went out for meal for my 18th and the bill came at like £120 or something, my parents tipped a fiver. Cos I was so chuffed with ut, I saw the waitress again and additionally tipped her a tenner. It made her night.

I've never liked tipping people, not because I haven't ever had a service that makes me feel happy as a client purchasing a product but because more often than not the waitress or waitor feels embaressed by the notion more often than not that is.

I was at a restaraunt with two friends once and the chain had recently done up their card machines to ask if we wanted to pay a tip along with the card transaction and the waitress actually apologized for it appearing when we paid because she felt it was embaressing. I can respect and see what she mean't.

In the U.S. It is pretty much expected for people to tip. I personally believe a tip should recognize exceptional service not be an expectation for average service. I tipped anyway because the system in the states means tips are virtually all the waitress gets.

I now live in Australia where tipping is not expected. I don't normally tip unless the service is amazing. I would like to point out though that service is usually crap here as a result of the lack of incentive.

Good God, yes. It's extremely poor form not to tip. Unless you genuinely can't afford it (but you should bear this in mind when choosing where to eat), or the service was disastrously poor, you should always leave at least a 10% tip. I tend to go by a 15% base, and then scale up or down to 20% or 10% depending on service. You shouldn't really consider it optional.

Yes - around 10% if I can do.

You can tell you lot are a bunch of tight ****ing students. When you grow up a bit you might understand why people give them tips.

Isn't a "discretionary gratuity" usually included in the bill, to come off the card automatically?

In the UK at least, I just find the idea of leaving cash for the waiter a bit demeaning. It feels more like saying "you need all the help you can get" rather than saying "thanks for the service". If I must leave tip, it'd usually be in the form of "This meal cost £35? But I only have £20 notes, so I'll have to leave £40. I won't wait for the change because I'm in a hurry and need to go".

Of course it's different in the US. And also in certain countries where they really do need all the help they can get, and that tip will feed their family for a week.

I actually do tip though - if they've been nice/standard
If they've been rude as hell to me then I won't!

Yes, I generally tip if I've had a meal and if they're service was generally pretty friendly. It's just what my parents brought me up to do
If I'm out with friends we generally just chuck all our spare change on the table before we leave :P
