Shredded wheat vs oatmeal/porridge
So I'm looking to lose weight and so I buy some shredded wheat, and atm I tend to have it with milk and some honey. I'm guessing the honey is probably not so good, because it's a sweetener but with "bland" things, I tend to go through the process of having some sugar/honey and eventually to none at all. It's happened with coffee for me and also with Weetabix (I was using sugar before)
Any way, what would be better; shredded wheat or oatmeal/porridge. I'm not looking to make oatmeal/porridge myself, and would rather it come out of a box. I realise that this can affect the GI of the food, but how would things like Scots oats(I think??), Quaker oats etc... etc... compare to shredded wheat with milk, for weight loss? -
Re: Shredded wheat vs oatmeal/porridgeHmmm.. Suppose but even if I did use almond milk, there'd still be the shredded wheat vs oatmeal argument(Original post by Sabertooth)
If you make either using almond milk it will have a lot less calories. Plus the almond milk is quite sweet in itself so you might no longer need the honey.
I haven't seen a real definite answer on my google travels yet. Also, I did some searching on mysupermarket and it seems that only sainsburys stock almond milk and it's the the UHT stuff, which doesn't tend to taste as goodLast edited by de_monies; 31-05-2012 at 00:28. -
Re: Shredded wheat vs oatmeal/porridgeYeah I know you still have the dilemma but I thought it might be an interesting suggestion for you.(Original post by de_monies)

I buy mine from tesco in the fresh milk section:

Re: Shredded wheat vs oatmeal/porridgeHmm. Definitely seems interesting but the only problem is that we don't have a Tesco local to me here and at uni, I get stuff delivered because it cuts down on time for more important things like revision/procrastinating so I tend to go where my shopping list is going to be the cheapest overall, which is usually Asda and Asda don't seem to stock it(Original post by Sabertooth)

Otherwise, I'd probably take you up on that -
Re: Shredded wheat vs oatmeal/porridge
Well, porridge definitely keeps you fuller for longer so might stave off the chance of snacking. I personally think it's awesome in the morning with a bit of fruit and yoghurt

Nothing wrong with a bit of shredded wheat though. Maybe you could alternate between porridge + that?
And don't worry too much about the honey - as long as you're not overdoing it I'm sure you'll be fine!Last edited by DannyW94; 01-06-2012 at 23:11. -
Re: Shredded wheat vs oatmeal/porridgeHmm.. I suppose. What brands would you suggest? I mean I saw some porridge in Asda today, and it was from Quakers where it said "instant porridge" surely that would affect it's GI, and not make you "fuller for longer" as opposed to making porridge from scratch?(Original post by DannyW94)

I mean I want to try porridge out, but I'm not too sure on whether the instant stuff really makes a difference
I used to have that, but I was under the impression that shredded wheat/porridge was better?(Original post by Alexok)
Missed out weatabix -
Re: Shredded wheat vs oatmeal/porridgeI don't particularly mind having no sugar, when I have hot milk, but on a sunny day, I'm not really going to warm my milk up. I did try having it without honey, and with cold milk, it just had this weird after taste, so I put in the honey(Original post by A-K-J)
I love shredded wheats without any sugar/sweetners you should try it.
At the moment im trying to have oatmeal without sugar and i wont say i like it but its definitely something i can get used to over time.
But with hot milk, I reckon it must absorb the milk a bit better because they tend to become softer more easily. Though shredded what tastes really good, raw -
Re: Shredded wheat vs oatmeal/porridgeI can't comment on the instant stuff because I've never actually had it tbh.(Original post by de_monies)

If you have the time I would make it from scratch with rolled oats - tastes more original then! Most of the time I go with using 1/2 milk and 1/2 water because it's the right balance and taste - if you use all water I find it quite plain.
In terms of brands, I've tried Quaker and an organic brand called One - both were really good, but I think Quaker tasted a bit more authentic. -

Re: Shredded wheat vs oatmeal/porridge
Honey is actually good for you, so I don't see the problem - as long as you brush your teeth well.
Sugar is a poison, but honey is amazingly healthy.
Type into Google 'honey healthy' and look at the benefits.Last edited by Formerly Helpful_C; 10-06-2012 at 05:07. -

However remember with all sugary and acidic foods you have to wait at least one hour before you can brush your teeth- basically because your teeth's enamel and other reasons will come off and therefore eventually screw your teeth up!

Re: Shredded wheat vs oatmeal/porridgeWhich is why I facepalm when I see people using strawberries to whiten their teeth. I would advise eating celery and rinsing with water immediately though.(Original post by Bettypratchit)

Agreed. lol- I have never heard of someone trying to whiten their teeth with strawberries before! Sounds like an unusual idea to do!
