How do you react when a stranger ridicules you?
Suppose you're on a train, with a group of strangers, minding your own business.
You catch wind of the comments and laughs they're having about you. Perhaps about your clothes, your hair or maybe your body. (a recurring trend on one's image)
How do you react? What you think? How do you feel? -
Re: How do you react when a stranger ridicules you?
The other day I was late for work and rushing through town to get there, walking as far as I could. I have a larger chest and along the way some guys across the road from me started shouting "Bounce! Bounce! Bounce!" in time with my step. Was a little irritating but I just ignored them and carried on. I do the same no matter what I hear, although sometimes I'll send a smirk their way if I think the person's being petty.
Had some chav make a negative comment on my face recently as well, it hit me quite hard but I didn't let him have the satisfaction of seeing that, just carried on past

If it's a passing flippant comment then I can accept it. If it's an aggressive or hurtful comment then I am likely to react in a likewise aggressive manner.
However I would add that I seldom ever react overly aggressively to a large group of people having a laugh at my expense. For me it's common sense to try and control my aggression/anger in this situation because if I started insulting them and I was on my own I would probably end up getting a kicking. If it's a one person then it's a different matter. -
Re: How do you react when a stranger ridicules you?
I was on a train once when some lagered up little chavs started making fun of some disabled people. This bloke who was clearly three sheets to the wind and was looking for a toilet heard them and asked them to stop as his brother was disabled. They didn't stop and so he gave the biggest one a big slap full to the face.
It was a beautiful moment which I still cherish. -

I don't hear them. Any time I leave the house I've always got my headphones in. The thought of doing so otherwise, especially concerning my social anxiety, just seems weird.
It's doubtless that people will take the piss out of me for my appearance, but people have been taking the piss out of me for years, so it's actually gotten to the point of it being water off a ducks' back. -

However this kind of thing pretty much never happens to me now. -

I usually assume that they are jealous...I don't think that I'm especially attractive or fantastic or whatever, but I'm definitely not worth ridiculing and so if someone feels the need to do that, then I'll only assume they must have a bit of a boring life and feel insecure about themselves. I either roll my eyes and ignore them or pretend I didn't hear and leave them to it.
