Languages applicants for 2013!
University course discussion for Foreign Languages.

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!Haha ye, I love it too - which films/tv shows do you watch?, I found it really difficult to find any, so I mainly just read swedish books.(Original post by OddThings)
I'm tempted to agree,I'm watched a few films and tv series in Swedish with subtitles and I love the sounds and general cadences of the language.
I love listening to swedish music, singing along to veronica maggio has improved by pronounciation tenfold. and finnish <3 also a great language!(Original post by Etoile)
I know a wee bit of Swedish, and what I found really helps is reading the paper (I usually go for the Svenska Dagbladet) and listening to music! I'm not even applying for Scandinavian Studies, although I'd love to as well as French/German if that were possible, and I just go around singing in Swedish or Finnish all the time haha! As well as films/tv of course - Sweden makes amazing crime and horror

Sort of I'm going for St Edmund Hall, but I'm not actually too fussed, I just thought it seemed really nice(Original post by bíborcsiga)
Oh, I was actually looking at Economics courses, because apparently they're quite good, and there's virtually no tuition fee.
Doing a Masters there is always an option, though.
Do you already have a specific Oxford college in mind?

Anyone else thinking of doing a triple language course ?
Not sure if it'll be too much work... I'm studying for A-Levels in French, Italian and Spanish, but really want to pick up Russian too :/
I am
I'm doing French and Spanish at the moment, and want to start Russian ab initio as well. Which courses have you been looking at? Think Durham and Nottingham may be my top choices.. I liked Southampton as well though, am also thinking of Sheffield/Manchester/Exeter.

Durham is definitely going to be my first choice, but have also looked at triple-language courses at Nottingham, Southampton and Liverpool as a back up. Also looking at double-language courses at UCL (wasn't impressed by the open day...), Exeter, Leicester and Bristol.
Have you been on any of the open days for yours ?? -

seems like a nice place

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!I thought very seriously about doing German, French and ab initio Russian (I'm doing A level French, German and Italian) but I eventually decided that the more languages you study, the less depth you are able to go into, and it wasn't worth it. I'm still going to learn Russian in my own time though, maybe evening classes.(Original post by EAM1995)

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!Yeah, have been to Durham, Nottingham, Sheffield and Southampton so far.. It was actually Nottingham and Southampton I liked most from the open day alone, because at Durham there wasn't so much opportunity to meet the faculty staff and get a sense for what the Department was like. But then they said that they have another open day more along those lines for people who actually get offers.. and the course looks great too, so it may well end up being my first choice after all(Original post by EAM1995)

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!Mmm yeah... I'm quite worried about lack of depth and not being able to do cultural modules too(Original post by Etoile)

I'm so interested in Russian that I'd really want it to be part of my actual degree, but can't face dropping French or Spanish either after all the effort I've already put into them... decisions decisions!

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!If you do Russian as an ab initio third language, then all you do is pure language modules, and the culture is what interests me which is why I decided that way. It pains me too!(Original post by Franglaisepresque)

They should make degrees the way we want them
-
Re: Languages applicants for 2013!This is what put me off the idea of ab initio Russian too, as I really want to learn about the history e.g. 1905/1917/Stalin and explore the literature e.g. Dostoevsky/Tolstoy.(Original post by Etoile)

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!And then there's also the whole worry of doing nothing but language work... I think I like it now, but it is entirely possible my head would explode if I did nothing different on the side!(Original post by Etoile)

I think I will just have to dither about it a bit longer and see; if the worst comes to the worst I can always change options at the last minute/drop something after first or second year... Language departments seem to be flexible about that sort of thing- or just good at accommodating indecisive people like me

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!Exactly! Me too!(Original post by PudPud)

The revolution, and folk art, and music, and icons... Russia is so interesting
But I can't live without German and it would be madness to give up French. So spare time it is :L

They know that we want to learn all the languages

It would be quite tough, especially as I want to start Spanish ab-initio. My PS would probably look like the work of some language-obsessive!

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!Are you allowed to do that as well?(Original post by PudPud)

Mine definitely will!

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!This is my dilemma. A tutor at Sheffield said it was perfectly possible (apparently some previous students managed to start year one studying FOUR languages).
I'm still toying with the idea of putting 3/4 French & Spanish choices on UCAS, whilst also adding 1/2 French and Russian. But then I have to factor in the possibility of a Cambridge interview (for French & Spanish) and having to explain my seemingly recreational study of Russian.
I really liked the look of UCL's SSEES and their Russian course.
Decisions, decisions...Last edited by PudPud; 13-07-2012 at 20:49. -

Nice selection of languages, I wish I were studying Italian, my dabbling is making me rather jealous of all Italian learners!

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!Ooh, I loved Southampton too, and although Durham is my favourite, I have to agree with you there. I did think however that Durham had a lovely feel to the department and was very thorough in how the course would work, but if I got an offer from there I like the idea of going there again to see the faculty staff (as well as going and checking out the numerous colleges again!). The course at Durham is still my favourite though, the thing that put me off Soton was only being able to go to one place during your year abroad, even if you want to study two/three languages; I really would love to explore France as well as Latin America...(Original post by Franglaisepresque)

What about you, which open days have you been to?
And I've been to Durham (amazing), UCL (slightly disappointing), Southampton (pleasantly surprised), and have open days booked for Bristol, Liverpool and Nottingham.
Thinking about Exeter too!
And you can't study literature/history/culture if you do a third ab initio language?! What?! Well this has confused my plans entirely... I studied Russian History for half of my AS History course and absolutely loved it...and my holiday there was amazing too, I want to learn more about it, but I'm in a similar position to Franglaise, I don't want to drop French and Spanish after all the effort I've put into them.... The great thing about Durham however, was that I could drop and change languages year on year.

Re: Languages applicants for 2013!It's a lovely language, lovely country, lovely culture, lovely people! I'd love to study it at university but I think there's more use for French, Spanish and Russian.(Original post by constantmeowage)
