I hate people like you.
(for wanting to steal from the state yet having an ipad/iphone)
Man I hate judgmental people who cry over taxes. Since when can't poor people get nice birthday presents...Last edited by SophiaKeuning; 31-05-2012 at 21:57. -
Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance application
I'm in the same position, my parents earn over the amount but can't afford to support me.
I'm not too worried though, i've applied for the cheapest accomodation which is 2800 a year, and i've budgeted that at about £30 per week spending money for food.
I'm planning to get a job to get extra things like clothes and give me a social life :P
All part of the uni experience! -
Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance applicationStrictly speaking, even if they don't give you money, that's fraud by false representation (contrary to s2 Fraud Act 2006) maximum prison sentence of ten years. So, don't lie.(Original post by jesusofsuburbia)
I kind of hate the "omg I'm so poor I can't afford anything but I'm typing on a Macbook" student people but this is a genuine concern for me. Basically, my Dad earns over the threshold so I get 0 financial help but I have a sister + 3 brothers so my family is quite a bit poorer than your average family that gets a bunch of help. My parents can't rly support me and given how much uni is I'm not sure I can get by, or rather I probably can but it's not gonna be worth the low quality of life and £50k of debt.
Questions I have -
1) how much is a reasonable amount to get by on per week
2) what happens if you lie on your student finance form? can you be prosecuted?
ty for the help
Your national insurance number will be cross checked with their records, so yes they will find out.(Original post by Zmit2260)
I am a single person current on jobseekers and housing benefit. Do I have to tell the benefits agency once I start Uni ? Would they be Abe to find out if I didn't tell them ?

Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance applicationThis person is considering benefit fraud during their time at university, whereas thousands of people will have to scrape by and work while at university. The ipad thing just pissed me off because they clearly aren't doing too badly.(Original post by SophiaKeuning)
And I hate you, bitch.

Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance applicationOops, didn't even read the part about them wanting to still claim while at uni! I was in a very bad mood while I wrote that, clearly don't hate you.(Original post by deejayy)

Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance application
The thing that really bugs me is that it ONLY takes parental income into account. Not any other income you might have from other relatives that still work, or large savings amounts, or debts for that matter. And as my dad constantly complains, it's the only form of debt where your own entitlement/repayments are based on SOMEBODY ELSE'S financial situation.
Add that to the stupid interest they've thrown in, which means at some income levels the loans become literally impossible to pay off, and the coalition has done a superb job of screwing over the whole university system. And I say that as a Conservative supporter. -
Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance applicationPretty sure pre-existing arrangements such as mortgages and rent are taken into account, but that may only be for independents(Original post by Theflyingbarney)

Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance applicationSince other people are paying for them (many of whom probably can't afford stuff like iPhones - I know I can't)?(Original post by SophiaKeuning)

Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance applicationit depends on what you consider 'reasonable' and what your expectations are ... disregarding accomodation and bills people can happily get by on double didgit figures of money per week whilst some will need more depending on their spending habits.(Original post by jesusofsuburbia)

as for whether youll be prosecuted? i doubt it theyll simply not give you the money, they dont just toss out cash willy nilly they do check to make sure youre not trying to screw the system i.e. your parents have to submit their p45s [or whatever theyre called] to show how much theyre earning. so no i wouldnt lie, itll just end up worse for you. -
Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance applicationWell yeah it's kinda the nature of a birthday present/gift that someone else pays for it you know.(Original post by Раскольников)

Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance application
I'd have been screwed in first year if I didn't have savings but I also didn't have a job. There's less pressure on you in terms of work load in first year so I'd use that to your advantage; find a job, rack up loads of hours, earn loads of dolla.
Also get a job over summer, start applying to places now. I worked full time over the summer in between first and second year and it wasn't a complete drag because it ended up being quite fun with the people I worked with.
If you work, budget on food and going out, don't buy unnecessary fresher-like things (i.e. spending hundreds in freshers' week), you'll be fine. -
For information I was given the iPhone as a present prior to being made redundant from work after 13 fully years at work :-/(Original post by deejayy)

Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance applicationAhhh I see now. Sorry about that!(Original post by LadyAz)
I don't think it was the benefits part, it was the "will they find out if I don't tell them?" implying they're trying to abuse the system as far too many do.

Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance applicationYeah I actually did, probably wasn't wearing my glasses :P(Original post by xmarilynx)

You can't fiddle student finance, even though it is a ridiculous system. I got annoyed when I found out a friend of mine who always seems to have plenty of money, but never had a job, is getting about double my maintenance loan and a grant of two thousand. If we are all going to pay back in the end anyway why can't was all get the same amount? Just got to be sensible and budget.I know a certian "friend" who has plenty of money.(Original post by LadyAz)

Her parents live in a 5 bedroom house and shes always bragging how shes getting a new sofa for her bedroom.
Both her parents are always jetting off to Dubai or Japan. She spent 6 weeks in america last summer & brags how shes been to 40 states.....sighhh
However apparently her parents income is £0 per year.
She then changed her mind and said there only income is the benefits from her disabled brother and they live off that.
She then let out her parents have £100,000's in savings and reiceved a hefty income from that. Because they didnt declare this
Shes getting full wack loan and grants.
And people like me whos family get £9000 per year plus some private pension from my dad. Get less money.
I deem that unfair (not because i get less therefore complaining to those that jump to conclusions) but becuase her parents are obviously very finanically stable and can afford lavish lifestyles.

Re: Not sure I can afford uni, i want to lie on my student finance applicationSimply moving out does not make someone an independent student.(Original post by BexiG)
Is there a way for you to become an 'independent student' rather than a 'dependent student'? As an independent student your parent's income won't be checked... So perhaps move out, if you can or something else.
