Do you ever wish you could change your degree?
Hi,
Sometimes I hear students say that the degree they are studying isnt how they expected it to be or maybe they didnt give a serious thought to their studies. But I also know plenty people who are happy with what they chose.
I personally am happy with half my course (dual honours) but since completing an elective I feel I would of replaced half of the course with a different degree subject.
DO you feel like that? -
Re: Do you ever wish you could change your degree?
I love my subject (well, subjects, the major advantage for me is the variety as I too am studying a joint course) but I have to admit to job prospects envy when I see internship ads and so on. Sometimes I wonder why I didn't do something more business/economics based...

Re: Do you ever wish you could change your degree?
Not seriously.
Sometimes, when exams are just around the corner and I've got a mountain of coursework to get through I do whisper 'oh, why couldn't I just have taken Racing Pigeon Management or something' but I have no real regrets. It's tough at times, but I wouldn't have it any other way and hopefully it will pay off in the end. -
Re: Do you ever wish you could change your degree?
Not a fan of my subject, physics, and instead think I should have done maths. Or at least physics at a worse university. I strongly considered switching, but decided to persevere with the course as I don't like giving up and the degree would ultimately get me where I want to go. Now in revision I have found some enjoyment in a few modules and next year I plan on taking a number of maths modules. I certainly feel better about the course than I did a while ago.

Yep, in that I wish I'd opted for something more vocational that included placements, more likelihood of employment afterwards, and had a clear direction to it. That said, I wouldn't have decided what it was I wanted to do without having had the experiences I've had from doing my current degree. So it's swings and roundabouts I guess

Re: Do you ever wish you could change your degree?I'm basically like this. There are times when it's 3 AM and I'm not nearly finished on an impossible problem sheet due the next day and I think "whyyyy did I apply for this subject?", but then there are other times when I really love what I'm doing. I think if a genie appeared and said I could switch to any other subject, and the genie would make the transition as smooth as possible and catch me up on what I'd missed, I don't think I'd change to anything.(Original post by Aspiringlawstudent)

Re: Do you ever wish you could change your degree?
I should have changed the PolSci half of my Joint Honours to Philosophy back in the mists of 2005. I didn't for reasons which now seem absurdly trivial, relating to league tables and such things which I now realise have no bearing on anything except the fantasy world of a socially isolated 6th-former or Russell Group undergrad. The intellectual and educative challenge would have been more fulfilling, whereas there was only twp moderately interesting module in PolSci - that is modules that didn't sound as if they were carefully modelled together by vapidly strung together social scientific half-thoughts and statements of the theoretically bloody obvious. One was a philosophy course (political philosophy) and the other (a module on Eastern European History and Politics), was for all intents and purposes - that is every reason but the department it was in - a history module. The same is true for the university I went too also, a smaller if less prestigious institution would have been better for my mental state.

Re: Do you ever wish you could change your degree?
Yes. I picked my subject at 17, as many do, it's far too early to really know. By the time I knew what I wanted to do I was in third year (of four) and couldn't change it, even in second year there was only one other subject I could change it to without starting again. I finished off my degree, effectively got a degree for the sake of it rather than really wanting that degree

I did change, twice. Now I'm doing something I finally love and don't regret it. It's always worth asking, although it can be hard, especially if you find your staff to be unapproachable.
I sometimes doubt it I guess when I'm up all night doing an essay, but that's mainly me cursing myself for leaving it until the last minute, again.Last edited by tillytots; 03-06-2012 at 20:26. -
Re: Do you ever wish you could change your degree?
Not anymore. Good job my course was combined with two others in the first year so I managed to switch pretty easily.
Going into the depth of plankton identification/physiology & counting and identifying isopods/amphipods put me off Marine Biology completely.
