    9/11 Jumpers
Could anyone please explain to me why those that jumped on 9/11 are frowned upon/cast outs?

I wouldn't say they were frowned upon. They did however put others lives in danger when they jumped. It was a big problem for the firefighters trying to access the building.

From what I have heard Americans generally prefer not to talk about them, perhaps due to the fact that they chose the option of suicide/an easy route out

Jumping hundreds of feet to their death rather than burning alive?

    Yeah, easy decision..

I don't think they are among normal people.

I suppose a few very conservative religious people frowned upon it but nobody that I know personally feels the same way. The reason there was so much publicity around the jumpers, I guess is because as far as I'm aware it was the first time there has (effectively) been what some might consider a "mass suicide" (all though I really didn't like writing that) in the full view of public/media.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought a lot of it was due to the fact among some people, jumping instead of staying inside the building was an act of suicide? I'm probably off the mark, but I think that was the case with one of the families interviewed in 9/11: The Falling Man. It's been a long time since I've seen it, though

Probably more in the respect they didn't stay inside and try and save lives etc.

Right i had this discussion a while back in class.

Would you rather burn alive in a steel fireball or jump and have a painless death?

Can someone also answer this also it turned into a sub debate, if someone jumped would they pass out during free fall?

How, pray tell, do you 'try and save lives' trapped on the 50th floor of a burning building, where the floors below you are incidentally on fire?

no, the whole pass out/have a heart attack if you fall from great heights thing is a bit of a urban myth but you would still die pretty quickly upon impact so i think jumping would still be preferable.

I'm pretty sure that if you jump from a height you die of fright or something before you hit the ground. I could e completely wrong, but thats what I have been told

Right. Because that's obviously the first thing you're looking to do when a plane crashes into your building. Save everybody else's lives.

The pictures of the 'jumpers' painfully brings home the reality of 9/11 and that ordinary people had to choose how to die. Nothing to me hits harder to home. I can't imagine what it's like for people living in New York, let alone the victims' families.

Have you ever been in a situation surrounded by people dieing and panic, where you are terifed and know you are going to/could die? Ill give you some advice, even after a lot of training most people arnt thinking about colateral damage.

Going to echo this. In the end, neither option is better, and I've never heard of them being looked down on, but then I'm not American.

I almost certainly would have done the same; don't really understand why anyone would frown upon this and in fact don't believe that many people do.
