It doesn't have a sixth verse. At best, it has two - neither of which are officially endorsed - and several hundred bizarre, tacked-on, 'alternative' verses penned to the melody.

Possibly just a ruse as you suggest though :P -
Re: Do you like the current national anthem of the UK?Do a bit of digging on it. There's one source for that having ever existed: an article in the Gentleman's Magazine, almost a century later in the 1830s, recounting (second or third hand, I can't recall which, but 'in the memory of an old man' or something like that) that it was sung in a couple of comedy acts in theatres in London in 1745 at the height of the Jacobite rebellion.(Original post by Lorem Ipsum)

Put in context, there have been literally hundreds of alternative verses penned to the tune. Some more accepted than others. This example is extremely low in the pecking order - having only been sung on a few occasions, 250 years ago, with no official endorsement at all. The only reason that it is recalled now is that Scottish nationalists eagerly want to present English people as anti-Scottish racists (I note, equally, it only relates to 'rebellious Scots'). It's quite damning that someone like Lord Goldsmith was foolish enough to be taken in by it.
To claim that is somehow a verse of the national anthem is absolute rubbish.Last edited by L i b; 01-06-2012 at 22:53. -
Re: Do you like the current national anthem of the UK?Well, I only meant it as a joke...in which case it seems it's perfectly valid!(Original post by L i b)

Re: Do you like the current national anthem of the UK?Is it not about slaughtering us lot?(Original post by Lorem Ipsum)
It did have words, but they were removed after Franco, deemed 'offensive'. Mind you, the sixth verse of God Save The Queen...

Re: Do you like the current national anthem of the UK?
It's not terrible, but I reckon we should go over to either "Land of Hope and Glory" or "Rule Britannia" once our current Queen passes away. God save our Queen just isn't as 'ballsy' as the ones other countries have (I'm a fan of the Russian anthem musically).

Well obviously, that's what it always was before(Original post by harreeeee)
Ive always wondered, if a King comes to the throne, do the lyrics in the anthem change to 'God save our gracious King'?

Re: Do you like the current national anthem of the UK?It's terrible... How can anyone possible take us seriously with such a ****ty national anthem?(Original post by ChunkyFudgeLover101)
I was looking at it and here it is according to wikipedia:
Do you like the song, or do you think it should change to something more around the citizens of UK or vowing to our country..? -
Re: Do you like the current national anthem of the UK?
I don't really care for it, but I rarely hear it anyway save at sporting events/last night of the Proms. I'd like the English to have a national anthem, though. Jerusalem is a wonderful song; I hope they change it to that. It seems more uplifting and memorable and about England than a dreary tune about the British monarchy.

Re: Do you like the current national anthem of the UK?
Its not to bad compared to some others. It is instantly recognisable from others, and people know about it, unlike when a mexican won an f1 grand prix in the 1960's and they played the mexican hat dance instead.
Yeah there probably are some slightly better ones we could chose, however there are worse out there that other countries have.
