Sick of changing my mind :'(
So the thing is I am applying for university for next year and I am stuck between doing Social Work, Psychology and Counselling, World Cinema and a language, Criminology or Mental Health Nursing. I am confused as to what career to go into too...
I want to either be:
A social worker.
A counsellor.
A victim support officer
or
A mental health nurse.
I am really sick of changing my mind.
P.S the reason World Cinema and a language is there is because I am enjoying my film studies course and I get to go around the world and Criminology is there because I would love to work with criminals and/or victims of crime.
Also I know that I want to go to the University of Leeds.
Sorry for rambling on but I would like to make a decision. I hate being indecisive! -
Re: Sick of changing my mind :'(You can move into any of those jobs from any of those jobs, in other words you can change career at any point. Pick the one that has the highest academic/entry standards, which will make it easier to move thereafter.(Original post by hopingforuni12)
.........
If you have time, you should try to get some practical insight/work experience in any of those areas, and the chance to discuss it with people actually working in those areas. -

That aint fair. In your opinion which one does?(Original post by threeportdrift)
You are the one that 'wants' the career, don't you think you should do the research? -
Re: Sick of changing my mind :'(No, she's quite right. You obviously have a lot of big ideas, and while it's good to have a goal, you don't want to go walking in to anything blindly. You might find, on looking at each possibility in detail, that one may be completely wrong for you for whatever reason.(Original post by hopingforuni12)

Do your research, basic - to find out the answer to your academic requirements question - and then detailed. That's really down to you. You'll find you have a much more rounded perspective of what you want having done that. -
I was asking her opinion thats all. Sorry to offend. I have done my research those are the careers I narrowed down from 10+ ...(Original post by sammy-lou)

Yes I know, but that sort of thing tends to be objective rather than based on someones opinion. If you look at various universities websites/prospectuses and compare the grade requirements for the courses that you are interested in then it will answer your question. -
Re: Sick of changing my mind :'(Psychology and Counselling sounds like an ideal course (if it is accredited) if you'd like to go into a victim support/counselling role. You can always change career paths in the future and gain the correct qualifications to become a mental health nurse if you feel that is something you would prefer to do. Psychology opens up a lot of doors, arguably moreso than Criminology due to there being a lack of jobs working with criminals/victims. Once you have completed an accredited Psychology degree, you can train to become a psychologist (forensic, health, clinical, educational, counselling etc.) but it is extremely competitive.(Original post by hopingforuni12)
I am interested in going to the University of Leeds for all of the subjects mentioned. The grades range from AAB to BBB so...Last edited by SpicyStrawberry; 01-06-2012 at 15:05. -
The only thing is I got an E in AS Psychology. I found it interesting but hated the studies I had to learn etc.(Original post by SpicyStrawberry)

Re: Sick of changing my mind :'(While that's not ideal it doesn't mean you cannot do well at degree-level since A-levels are nothing like it. What other subjects do you study and what grades did you get?(Original post by hopingforuni12)

So are you saying Psychology is a good option?(Original post by SpicyStrawberry)

Re: Sick of changing my mind :'(Well all of the jobs, except the world cinema + language, seem to be in the same area so it doesn't seem like you need to make that much of a decision!(Original post by hopingforuni12)

I personally think Psychology would be a good choice. Psychology is viewed quite highly I think because it's a science so you learn valuable skills such as how to deal with statistics, how to think critically, how to problem solve and work in teams. These can be applied to ANY job.
If you did pure Psychology, you can then go on to do a diploma in counselling as I think you need this anyway? In your third year you will pick from a list of modules and one should be criminology/forensic psychology and/or mental health so you can focus your interest then. (At Leeds it looks like you'd learn about psychological disorders in your second year and forensics in your 1st year but they may not be in that much detail :/ You may wish to find a uni that has these interests in your third year because they will be in more detail - just a thought though).
World cinema seems very focussed and may not appeal to other areas and probably won't help you get a job for the long term. There's no reason why it can't be a great hobby or interest - it'll make you seem cultured!- and you can travel in later life.
It looks like you have a good plan anyway, you maybe just need a little support or clarification from others to make your decision (I'm like this too).
My advice, in short, is do Psychology, pick third yr modules relevant to your interests. Use the world cinema as a hobby, and you may be able to take a language module in your second year.
Good luck with everything
P.S. I've read that you dropped Psych but that doesn't matter as you may not need it (you'll have to check with the uni first). Uni Psych is less about remembering studies for exams and more on critical thinking and research. In a third year mental health exam I only remembered 3 key studies and my lecturer (who was tutored by Eysenck!) said that's fine. If you wish to take Psychology and Counselling, make sure it's accredited - by the BPS i assume.Last edited by RowingGoose; 01-06-2012 at 19:13. -
Thanks. But I cant get into leeds. I only have an AS in Psychology at Grade E and i think you need the full A Level in it. Plus I only have a Grade C in Maths. Although I have Physics at Grade A and Biology at Grade B for GCSE Science.(Original post by RowingGoose)

Re: Sick of changing my mind :'(Ah right. Time to look at other unis then! Come to think of it, I think I applied to Leeds but didn't get the grades. I got BCDc at ALevel and went though clearing and ended up at Sunderland.(Original post by hopingforuni12)

I'd make a grid/spreadsheet in Excel of a list of unis, what grades they need, and what modules they do on the courses. Make a short list of 3-5 and visit them, then decide :-)
Either way, you'll enjoy your time wherever you go -
Ok. So if I dont decide on a career then psychology(Original post by RowingGoose)

I dont know how to get work experience in any of these areas.(Original post by ~ Purple Rose ~)
Have you done any work experience? All of those careers will require it, and it will help you decide which one to go for.
