Re: What social 'class' am I?Of course you find it fun, half your posts are talking about your class.(Original post by SoNottingH)

Re: What social 'class' am I?Lots of people get jealous of kids from families with a lot of money, but having held numerous conversations with such people, it often does seem to be the case that their families withold a lot of the pleasures they could enjoy from that position and indeed sometimes seem to deliberately set out to make things harder for them. I don't think spoilt kids are a great thing, but some families with money are very mean with their kids - they could do with lightening up a little and being more relaxed. A little spoiling in the right places goes a long way.(Original post by zara55)
It's easy to judge of course. I always felt a bit sorry for Stella McCartney, which sounds an odd thing to say, but she seems to have had a really hard time at the school she went to, being bullied for who she was. I guess people from lower backgrounds who make it higher up the social scale have a lot of fears of spoiling their kids. I see it from both ends, because families who have been upper-middles for a while like mine tend to have their way of doing things and then I have friends from the more "new well-off" backgrounds. I basically think though that if parents have a lot to spare, they should help their kids as much as possible, not ludicrously spoiled, but there is no reason why they shouldn't have comforts and some level of luxury I think, if their family can afford it. For sure it gives the child a different view of life, but that's their family situation anyway. -

Re: What social 'class' am I?Right, but you're not English by origin? I was just picking up on your attitude to class, which sounds non-English?(Original post by Aramiss18)
I have no idea what you are on about and no I've lived in England all my life. -

Re: What social 'class' am I?No, I don't:(Original post by AmyJ)
You are ignorant because you assume that all poor people are coarse, uneducated, economically unproductive and socially inept.
"uneducated", "economically unproductive" and "socially inept" are all your words. I've never said anything even vaguely similar to anything that you've just attributed to me. All I have implied is that being working class increases the likelihood that an individual will use slang, questionable grammar and have a relatively limited vocabulary. I have outlined the reasons that I believe this in the post I've just quoted.(Original post by Chucklefiend)
No of course it doesn't. They are just stereotypes and there are of course exceptions. But like I've said, the ideology of class in this country is largely based upon stereotypes. Furthermore, considering working class people tend to live in poorer areas with less successful schools and poorer quality teaching it's not unreasonable to conclude that typically working class people are likely to have a smaller vocabulary and poorer grammar. -
Re: What social 'class' am I?How long is "a while"? Just trying to get a handle on your immediate class background - were your parents raised working class, or did they have money in their families?(Original post by Bill_Gates)
Property has been around for a while. -
Re: What social 'class' am I?So you saying that everybody who lives in Bradford, Moss Side or the poorer areas of Liverpool are members of the underclass are you? Because that's what this post implies.(Original post by Aramiss18)
Conflating working class with underclass and then lecturing on ignorance. -
Re: What social 'class' am I?That's so widely known it's almost laughably unworthy of further discussion.(Original post by Chucklefiend)
So you saying that everybody who lives in Bradford, Moss Side or the poorer areas of Liverpool are members of the underclass are you? Because that's what this post implies.
Similarly, everyone in London is loaded. -
Re: What social 'class' am I?
I'm the same as you really, I would say working class. You don't have to have parents unemployed to count as working class, both your parents do normal jobs and you went to state school, that makes you working class. Whether I am working class or not doesn't matter to me at all, it is only a matter of definitions. My town has never had big industry so I have never experianced any working class culture like I imagine there is in places that have a lot of manufacturing work or in old mining towns. I have grow up with middle class kids and don't feel any different to them its just my parents have worse jobs.

Re: What social 'class' am I?For what it's worth OP, given the occupation of your Head of Household, the government might class you as either a C1 (lower middle) or B (middle-middle) category, depending on the professional level of your father. If he is a graduate, professionally qualified type of underwriter with a well-paid job, that moves you towards middle-middle. From your general description so far it sounds like you would be officially classed as lower-middle.(Original post by Torpedo Fish)
So based on this what would you say my social class is likely to be? -
Re: What social 'class' am I?I say aitch so what class am i?(Original post by the bear)
