    Widely believed myths
Napolean wasn't actually short. Though his height post-mortem was recorded in French inches at 5'2" that would convert to a height of 5'7" in British units making him above average height for his day and age.

Any other widely believed myths that have endured for a long time?

He was taller than Nelson according to QI.

Anyway, that whole 'mince pies are illegal because Cromwell didn't like them law' isn't true. There was an article on the BBC News website a while back dispelling all sorts of myths about laws.

You lose most of the heat from your head

Not true. Your head is most likely to be uncovered and lose heat, but by the head-loses-more-heat logic no trousers and a hat would be warmer.

    Your tongue has taste regions

Still taught today but actually not true at all. It was a mistranslation from a German (I think) scientific paper.

Marie Antoinette never said "Let them eat cake"
Rene Descartes never said "I think therefore I am", he said "I think therefore I exist, at least as a thinking thing"

Men don't think about sex every 7 seconds (I am always shocked that anyone is stupid enough to even believe this).

Shaving doesn't change the way your hair grows.

    Sugar doesn't make children hyperactive.

EDIT: Since it seems to have come up a few times in this thread, I will also speculate on the popular myth that Wikipedia is full of lies. It actually turns out to be considerably more reliable than people think. It turns out that just because anyone *can* edit the page on Euler's Totient Function, it doesn't mean they actually want to.
