    How to stop gambling?
Dont know about anyone else here, but as a student I am constantly seeking out new opportunities to get money, and gambling seemed like the 'easy' way to do it. Especially when you cant get a job anywere.

With the majority of money I get, it ends up in them stupid roulette machines in the bookies or a splurge at the casino. I cant stop myself. Even when I win, I cant walk away and be happy/Today for example, I was £80 up after going in with £5, i lost it all before I left. I thought fair enough.. in theory i only lost £5 of my personal money. But because i had nothing to do all day I ended up going back. And now im down £70. So in the space of a few hours I have been up £80 to down £70. It might not be a lot to some people but im a student, and when youre putting gambling before other aspects of youre life it starts to get worrying.

I have gambled for little over a year, but recently its started to get out of hand.
I feel like I have to gamble on a daily basis, and every bit of free time I get when
im bored I think about gambling and before you know it ive lost more money.

Now I feel like I need that money back, ive lost more than that before, but this time its really hit me, because im sick of it.

I dont want a lecture of anyone, I know what i am doing is wrong etc.

However, I would like some advice if any of yous have experienced something similar.

    Thanks guys.

I was the same back in my day. But its a waste of time lots of great ways to make money out there. You just have to spend abit first (gamble) and hopefully in the long term it pays off. Think about it.

I used to be on William Hill online all the time cos it was so convinient and easy to bet. I wasn't betting loads every day, but it all adds up (like £40 a month online). Also when you win, as the money is just given as credit, I'll always just put the winnings on another bet. After like 6 months I just decided to delete my account completely and I froze (put it in the freezer so it temporarily stopped working) my gold account card thing for the Casio in town as I was beginning to bet increasingly every week.
Firstly just reduce the amount you are spending. So go into the casino with like £4, then gradually bring it down. Also, write down starting from today, how much money you have spent gambling and how much you have got back in return. Its pretty much certain youll have made a loss. Remember at a bookies that the odds are deflated anyway so a 10/1 bet is probably realistically 20/1 probability. Obviously a casino or bookies won't operate if there's a chance they'll lose out. Also think of the greedy fat mike Ashley type owners who don't care if you lose money in their casino! Lol good luck

Don't chase your losses, that is the path to ruin.

No such a thing as easy money, if it was easy then everyone would be doing it.

If you are going to gamble then know your game.

So you lost £5 today or whatever, work out your total costs and total profit since you started feeding the cash cow that is roulette machines then you will know wa'gwarn.

Thanks for the replys people, all pointers have been noted.

And I didnt just lose £5 today I lost £70 (after I went back later in the day to try win again)

I understand chasing youre losses is a bad idea, one that im trying to get out of. Really need to just give it up before it gets out of control. Thankfully all im losing is bits of money, and im not in debt or anything or in any major trouble. But considering im only 19 i still see my gambling is a big problem in comparison to how much i actually get a month.

Not in any major trouble or debt yet but you will be if you carry on. You need to find something else to do with your time. Stop before you become properly addicted. You can get broken legs and all sorts if you go down the path you seem to be heading. And as a student you cannot afford it. You will be worrying about loan sharks and have a wandering mind when you should be concentrating on your degree.

Cut your losses and get out of the habit.

Rule number 1. Know your game

    2. Only lose what you can afford.

    Smart betting.

Instead of betting on roulette, bet on football.

Start with £20, get it up to £900 playing Blackjack then stay five minutes longer than you should (you have work at 4PM, should have left at 15:35) and lose it on your final play, you'll stop. Believe me.

ok, it could be worse. My friend put his student loan on roulette and lost. about 1500 I think it was.

I end up like this every summer. I lost about £300 and was determined to get it back until a friend basically told me to wise up and cut my losses otherwise I'll make a bad situation worse.

You have to really just ignore it. Cut your losses like I did and move on with your life

Not necessarily. The game exists provided the house wins. In a game in which one plays against the house, then naturally only the house wins ITLR. But in a skill game, then the player can still win.

Play poker instead - it's a game that can actually provide a sustainable income.

Think about it, let's say you play roulette and just go odd/even. That gives you a less than 50% chance of winning, plus the house takes a small cut each time you bet. In the long term, statistically, you will always lose.

Wherease, in a skill game, such as texas hold'em, you are winning money of other people, many of which have many more times money than common sense/intelligence. A much better deal.

    Re: How to stop gambling?
I think your first problem is that you are using roulette machines or going to the casino, both are designed so that on average people will lose money, yes there is a chance you could win, but there is a greater chance you will leave with less money than you came in with.

I would also advise against Poker as someone suggested, people often think that they are skilled at Poker when they really aren't (this illusion is created because people often don't understand the key to Poker is knowing when to quit, and it's not about how many hands you win.)

Maybe you could try limiting how much you spend a week (instead of £70, tell yourself your only going to spend £40, and once you've reached that target a few weeks later go down to £30 a week and keep lowering your betting money budget every few weeks until it's under control.)

Why any of you are suggesting a current undergrad I presume should try any form of gambling as a sustainable source of income really beggars belief.

Maybe a better suggestion would be finish your degree then read up on some forms of gambling which have favourable odds compared to other forms before you even bother.

However if you become easily addicted to things then stay away from gambling altogether.

If you want to be broke and in debt the rest of your life though then yeah just gamble for the hell of it without knowing what the odds of you winning are or anything.

Some games are strategy, poker is part psychology part strategy more the former, roulette can be beat but only live and if you can calculate on the spot where the ball is likely to land so you can cover a section. You need to read up on whatever it is you fancy.

Gamble for fun fine but only if you are not bothered about what you lose.

Be warned gambling can consume you, my dads friend lost his house and everything due to gambling addiction, cards I think, and I know a few people who have lost a ridiculous amount of money (10k+) in the long run playing those roulette machines.

Maybe worth reading a bit about gambling addiction too, you could be a sadistic gambler who gets some sort of thrill out of losing.
