Re: People who get A* in Eng Lit are smarter than people who does the same in Science(Original post by Alevelsareboring)
Who else agrees? I was having this argument with a couple people; me and my friend do writing subjects and are predicted A/A*'s and the people who we were debating with are Science/Maths students predicted the same.
I think subjects like Maths and Science especially are synoptic, it's more to do with being able to remember things like atoms and molecules than raw talent. Maths is a lil different because you have to be smart to understand mathematical concepts etc, but overall i think it's synoptic. I think if your mind can absorb loads of knowledge easily then you will excel at both subjects.
English Literature on the other hand takes raw talent, English students who do well have the ability to interpret a piece of Literature in numerous ways, which takes skill. It's not just knowing what the makes an atom or what x + y is which can be learned through intense revision. It's more to do with raw talent, English Students writing is stylized, cohesive and structured, it takes skill to be able to structure a piece of writing and analyse texts etc.
I dunno, that's just what i think, i'm not saying it's right so don't go all crazy on me, i just want opinions.
Different types of talent and intelligence, it's stupid to judge them against each other. Both are difficult in different ways, that's why you find so few people good at english who can do science, or vice versa.
The really intelligent people are the ones who can get A* in English lit, AND get an A* in a science. -
Re: People who get A* in Eng Lit are smarter than people who does the same in ScienceIn my personal statement i compared English as to painting a picture, which i still believe interpreting a book, play, poem, song, is just like doing.(Original post by the666thmessiah)
No.
There is no such thing as "Raw Talent".
Define intelligence in your arguements favour then you might have a leg to stand on... Oh wait, you cant do that because the paradigm of definition is science.
All literature does is talk about definition and sound pretty. It discovers nothing and requires no creative, abstract, or problem solving thought.
Please tell me you don't believe the study of literature requires no creativity. If anything, that's is the only thing required. -
Re: People who get A* in Eng Lit are smarter than people who does the same in ScienceI suggest you look at some of the courses they offer on UCAS and see if any interest you before you decide for definite. Nothing worse than finding a course that really interests you a few months later down the line and then realising you don't have the right A Levels to do it..(Original post by alj123)
I don't know what I want to do to be honest :/ -
Re: People who get A* in Eng Lit are smarter than people who does the same in ScienceReally? The answers are decided afterwards- what exam board is that!(Original post by swiftylol)
But the thing is, arriving to that "answer" isn't always as simple as you make it seem. Not to mention for some subjects, the answer is decided after the papers are sat, meaning it may be "correct" but at the same time incorrect just because it wasn't on the mark scheme.
I know UMS is set after they are all marked.
Im not saying maths and science are easy at all, i know for a fact they are not- all my friends do them and i help them sometimes, and i find it difficult for sure.
I really think getting an A* is harder though- because you could have read every book going and write and fantastic essay and walk out with a E or U- simply because of the marker.
Happened to so many last year
and they were way better than me no doubt.

Re: People who get A* in Eng Lit are smarter than people who does the same in ScienceWhat? Further Maths is where the interesting stuff is at A-level.(Original post by Doctor.)
On sorry, they're A2 exams.
The AS stuff Isn't too bad though, but to be getting the real 100/100's you'll have properly understand. It's A2 that screws people over lol
Don't get me started on Further Maths -that just destroys any subject

Re: People who get A* in Eng Lit are smarter than people who does the same in ScienceI understand(Original post by Elzie)
When you say sciences are easier because it's just memorising facts, I'm sure all AQA A2 biology students will understand when I say:
SHREWS.

Re: People who get A* in Eng Lit are smarter than people who does the same in ScienceHarder, probably, but with good reason? Not really.(Original post by Forget that)

Answers being partly subjective and marking being inconsistent does not necessarily make for a higher grade being more respectable. It's still jumping through hoops, except instead of jumping through hoops you can see, you're jumping through hoops with a blindfold on. -
Re: People who get A* in Eng Lit are smarter than people who does the same in ScienceWhat offers do you hold?(Original post by Elzie)
My nightmares are filled with shrews, multicoloured geese and U's..
I need to get a B in biology to get into either of my firm / insurance choices so the pressure is gonna be tough
My AS is at a current low B haha but chemistry and Maths im fine with.

Re: People who get A* in Eng Lit are smarter than people who does the same in ScienceI would check to see what history you do at A Level, should you choose it. I know at our college people get a choice of modern (19th and 20th century), tudors and stuarts (16th and 17th century) and ancient classical.(Original post by alj123)
Well, I am currently at A* in Spanish and A* in art. I have been advised to take art and I'm definitely taking English. I do take history at gcse, but it is not the type of history I like (we do hitler and the wars, but I like tudors Victorians etc) so I probably won't take history, I am an A in it at the moment but it is not enjoyable.
Otherwise your subjects are great
they do complement each other, i was simply thinking about history as another essay subject (as Spanish and art are not) to support your English.

Re: People who get A* in Eng Lit are smarter than people who does the same in ScienceI've firmed Durham for AAA and got Newcastle as my insurance for AAB!(Original post by James A)

My AS was A, but I got a C in my unit 4 which I'm obviously retaking! Thought I'd done really well, which is the worst part! :L -
