Best ever film battles?

Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

Freddy vs Jason is a guilty pleasure of mine, and their big brawl at the end is great. As a horror fan, it gave me a good couple of nerd-gasms.

It's not a film but the battle scene in the most recent Game of Thrones episode ("Blackwater") was really good.

I would say without a doubt the LOTR Two Towers fight was the best - emotion, tension the stunning victory, it had everything

The aerial battle scences in "The Battle of Britain" (1969) Like this one from the end of the film:

    Simply brilliant.

Opening of Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan. All of 300 and LOTR.

And the standoff in Alien and ending.

This without a shadow of a doubt. It didn't need bull**** CGI to be epic, just gritty realism.

Still though, do their clips have infinite ammo or something?

The whole scene is so intense, and it's just so impressive. Not knowing where that one sniper was, just sitting on the edge of my seat while the squad were being picked off one by one. The battle is not massive in scale, but it just goes to show Kubrick's ability to craft something so special and exciting with such a small cast.
    Bravo, Stanley.

    Opening of Gladiator
While I love Gladiator, I fail to see how the opening battle scene can be called one of the best ever film battles. All that happens is the Romans absolutely annihilate a bunch of Germanic tribesmen - there is no real tension or possibility that the Romans could lose. Also it is complete BS historically. Pretty sure catapults were used when attacking cities and fortresses - not for hitting barbarians running through the middle of a forest. And since when did the Romans successfully conquer Germania?

I would say that the Battle of Pelennor Fields would be the best battle scene ever if it wasn't for the ghostly Army of the Dead just slaughtering all the orcs and Haradrim deux ex machina. Yes I know it was in the book, but it should have been cut out of the film. The Rohirrim saving the day is much more epic. Aragorn could have led the Dunedain of the North to the battle, proving he is the rightful king of Gondor/Arnor, which would have been a better idea imo.

So overall I'd say that the Battle of Helm's Deep is probably the best one ever, followed by Omaha Beach in Saving Private Ryan. The best battle scene ever in a TV programme goes to the Battle of the Blackwater in Game of Thrones - the one part of S2 that exceeded my expectations relative to the book. "Halfman! Halfman!"

I concur. This and Darth Maul vs Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon almost made the prequel trilogy worthwhile. Everything from the music to the setting is perfect.

I preferred the final battle scene from The Fellowship of the Ring, absolutely incredible. Some of the shots were beautifully executed, and I love the setting too; it's all real and naturalistic. Howard Shore's Amon hen really brought the whole thing together too.
