Best ever film battles?
Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

This without a shadow of a doubt. It didn't need bull**** CGI to be epic, just gritty realism.

Re: Best ever film battles?
The whole scene is so intense, and it's just so impressive. Not knowing where that one sniper was, just sitting on the edge of my seat while the squad were being picked off one by one. The battle is not massive in scale, but it just goes to show Kubrick's ability to craft something so special and exciting with such a small cast.
Bravo, Stanley.

Re: Best ever film battles? While I love Gladiator, I fail to see how the opening battle scene can be called one of the best ever film battles. All that happens is the Romans absolutely annihilate a bunch of Germanic tribesmen - there is no real tension or possibility that the Romans could lose. Also it is complete BS historically. Pretty sure catapults were used when attacking cities and fortresses - not for hitting barbarians running through the middle of a forest. And since when did the Romans successfully conquer Germania?(Original post by Dwayne Hicks)
Opening of Gladiator
I would say that the Battle of Pelennor Fields would be the best battle scene ever if it wasn't for the ghostly Army of the Dead just slaughtering all the orcs and Haradrim deux ex machina. Yes I know it was in the book, but it should have been cut out of the film. The Rohirrim saving the day is much more epic. Aragorn could have led the Dunedain of the North to the battle, proving he is the rightful king of Gondor/Arnor, which would have been a better idea imo.
So overall I'd say that the Battle of Helm's Deep is probably the best one ever, followed by Omaha Beach in Saving Private Ryan. The best battle scene ever in a TV programme goes to the Battle of the Blackwater in Game of Thrones - the one part of S2 that exceeded my expectations relative to the book. "Halfman! Halfman!"

Re: Best ever film battles?I concur. This and Darth Maul vs Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon almost made the prequel trilogy worthwhile. Everything from the music to the setting is perfect.(Original post by reapz)
