I would say: "it's not about who you are, but how beautiful you are to others".

You're really hung up on this. Even if you do have a face like an arse you're better off not letting it worry you.

certainly have a few friends in a much better position to break into finance than me due to having influential family members in the field - so it's validated for me

Who you know is only useful till you are asked what you know, if the answer is 'nothing' then it doesnt really matter who you know

It is indeed true. I have no medical qualifications or experience but I'm gonna try and pull some strings with my GP to get into the profession.

Will that work? I want to study medicine and I'm looking for relevant experience with my GP.

True. I'm not gonna give personal examples but I agree, and it's wrong but you wouldn't complain if you knew influential people...

It's true in some professions today. But who you know is much less of a factor than it was a couple of decades ago.

Worked for me. I have a friend whose dad is part of the GMC managed to sort me out with some work experience. That also doesn't mean that if you don't have contacts you will not find work experience. It just means it will be a bit more difficult.

It really depends on the situation. For certain jobs whether it be in a shop or in finance or in music production I believe it comes down to who you know to provide you with the opportunities. However when it involves becoming a doctor no matter how popular you are, I don't care if you are related to the Queen, if you do not have the sufficient knowledge and skills required you cannot be a doctor. You have to go through the system and become qualified like anyone else out there.

In the end, in whatever job it is, you will have to show people what you can do for the profession. If you don't have a clue about the job and only got in because of your connections, you will not last long.

Yes. I pretty much gave up on Music as a career this year to pursue an Accounting degree. You can have all the chops to be the best musician in the world but no contacts will get you as far as a wannabe in the corner pub. Harsh reality
