Just realised that this summer in between work and other hobbies I need something to do. I'm thinking it would be good to start learning myself a new language. Before everyone starts saying 'oh its your choice not ours', I am just wondering what language you recommend me learning.

I hopefully will start learning soon and see how much I've learnt by Christmas

Hmm it depends how much time you can put in as well, and if you want it to use the same english alphabet or a completely new alphabet e.g. arabic

I quite like the idea of learning Arabic or Mandarin.... Ages ago I was learning Russian but I never really got into it.

Not worth it. It's easier for Chinese people to learn English, than for English-speakers to learn Chinese. Chinese will never be the lingua franca of the world. Never. I mean, ffs, the writing system? You will never see that in popular use.

go for it If you do arabic, the alphabet is practically the same as the Urdu alphabet, so you'll be able to read it.

I'm thinking of trying to learn Italian over the summer. I've always struggled with languages and I know that my university offers lessons but I don't want to even entertain the idea unless I know I'm actually capable of making some progress!
