Re: AQA A2 Product Design June examOoo that sounds like fun(Original post by SJS101)
As for subjects - Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Product Design and ICT
UNI - was planning on going to Cambridge but the gits rejected me without an interview so going to Southampton to do Aeronautics and Astronautics, then hoping to get into F1 (aerodynamist) :P
! ah well, it happens >=[ !
Wait your doing 5 subjects? WoW -
Re: AQA A2 Product Design June examAw thats good! Everyone aims for different things, hope ya get into yours(Original post by qqprzem)
Sheeet. All you lot have such awesome aspiration.
I'm just hoping to get in to do my college course in Art and Design!
! I kinda wish I found another way to get into Architecture, I'm pretty reluctant going to uni, because of the fees and knowing lots of people not getting jobs after it all aswell, kinda scares me XD But oh well, only time will tell

Re: AQA A2 Product Design June exam
Who thinks the marketing mix could come up?? Im finding it hard to remember it >.<
Product - function, performance, ease of use, reliability, aesthetics, compatibility
Promotion
Process
Place
Pleasure
People
Price
Physical evidence
Properties
Or is this more about application of the knowledge :? -
Re: AQA A2 Product Design June examYou've really lost me there. I have no idea what you are talking about. Try and elaborate on that! :P(Original post by ds4143)

Re: AQA A2 Product Design June exam
Ohh sorry I assumed everyone would know about it XD
Um well its on page 146 and its just basically about designers considering what will influence the success of the product. I'll just explain what each point is, maybe that will jog your memory
Product - Function (What function does the product have?
Performance ( How well does the product do what its intended to do)
Ease of use ( How easy is it to use/set up, instructions available?)
Reliabilty (How likely it is to fail/last)
Aesthetics (Does it look appealing to target market)
Compatability (Does the product work with other product Computer &
phone)
Promotion - Advertising product through packaging
Process - How easily can the user purchase the product
Price - too low, user may think its too cheap therefore unreliable
too high, user may be less willing to buy
Place - designers ensure manufacturers deliver product on time- 'JIT' systems.
Physical evidence - Reassure users that they have bought it
Properties- aestheitcs and environmental performance
Pleasure- A product that does more that user expects is added value - it pleases the user
People - good salesmen needed to help promote the product
I'm wondering if it would come up??

Re: AQA A2 Product Design June exam
Hey! So happy this thread was made!
So nervous for this exam on Wednesday! Im not going to Uni at the moment but still want to do well In it. Im predicted an A but Im really unsure of whether I will be able to reach that grade.
Im really struggling on specific designers we have to learn, I know quite a few but Im worried that won't be enough!
Any help on which designers/products you guys have learnt would be appreciated greatly
Thank you!

Car interior
Mobile phone
Dyson
Advancement in tech - Radio 1930's to 1970's+
umm..
Car interior for a disabled person
Smart car
G-wiz electric car
and a few more that I cannot remember...mm thats not good -
Re: AQA A2 Product Design June examIt all depends on what you think you're the weakest at. Prioritise that way.(Original post by kekabek)
Can someone give me a list of key topics I should revise for this exam?
I have been revising and stuff but I need a guidance of a list :/
I don't think any of us can tell you what to revise and then be held accountable if it doesn't come up! :P -

Re: AQA A2 Product Design June examI had the SAME problem last year, I had NO idea what to study because product design has not got a guidance or anything, plus theres only two exam papers! I didnt do well in this exam last year simply because I did not my stuff! (plus I hat essay writing LOL)(Original post by kekabek)

I think that EVERY single tiny information in the book is what you need to know :O
I was going through the exam questions and are the questions in some way are already in the book. Like in one of the papers it was talking about hair straigtners and some other stuff...well that was one of the examiners tips in the book saying to go over it...and boom it came up in the exam. So I suggest you literally memorise the book! Thats how my friend got an A in the exam, I guess everyones different but what she did makes sense, well to me anyways
Ive read the book about a thousand times now, and there are still some things I need to go over so that it sticks in my head! I feel abit more confident about the exam knowing the contents because in the mark scheme it does look for DETAILED answers showing examiners that you know what your talking about.
And dont forget to have certain products ready and researched, so that you can answer them kind of questions in the exam. For Iconic design...you should have a product fully researched, for example Apple Ipod...or Dyson vacuum cleaner DC01.
Hope this has helped you!! Good luck in your exammm

Re: AQA A2 Product Design June examI dont really know the telephone that well, I chose to learn about the radio 1930's-1970's+ ...its also developemtn in tech(Original post by bwfcboy93)
Hey, could anyone give me some pointer on the developments in technology for the telephone or MP3 player? Thanks in advance
1930's
- had 240 mains curcuit powered by thermionic valves
- vavles were the forerunners of transistors
- vavles produced alot of heat
- large spaces between the valves were needed for the dissipation of heat
- many copper wires to attach components together
- radios was too large to be portable, 200mm diameter loud speaker!
- wooden box casing = extremely heavy
- too expensive
1940's-1950's
- Transistors introduced, they replaced thermionic valves
- two materials needed, n-type (conducts negative electrons)
p-type (conducts positive electrons)
- transistors controlled flow of electrons at the p-n-p junction
- less power needed compared to thermionic vavles
- therefore only 9volt battery supply needed
- this miniturisation in tech meant that copper wires were reduced and printed circuit boards introduced
1960s
- bakelite introduced
- used as leather-like material to cover wooden box to improve sound quality
1970s
- bakelite replaced by ABS
- lighter radios
- colour used,
- no extra costs or time for finishes
- intergrated circuit (IC) introduced, meant that 1000s of transistors could be placed on a small chip
- therefore less energy required- smaller batteries - smaller devices
1970s+
- GUI introduced ( Visual display)
Hope thats helped

Re: AQA A2 Product Design June exam
Thank you! That helped quite a bit as im just struggling to remember everything! What I need to do today Is look over a few iconic products in detail as that's what the mark scheme wants doesn't it? Im just really finding it hard to remember everything about everything haha!
Fingers crossed though!
Thanks again!

Re: AQA A2 Product Design June examIkr theres so much to remember!!!!! ahh(Original post by BurtyB)

Yup well the mark scheme is not very clear when it comes to marking your own question...there is no specific answer >.< you're right though, it does ask for detail detail detail
Do you think the
- arts and craft movement
- art nouveau
- art deco
- post war
- bauhaus ( modernism)
- Post modernism (memphis stuffs)
would come up?! I hate this part of the book -.-!! I know it came up in the 2011 June paper, something about the bauhaus chair, so hopefully it wont coem up?! what do you think?
And what kind of products have you researched up on? -
Re: AQA A2 Product Design June exam
Yeah Ive done a few past papers, but Ive found it really hard to mark them, as you said there is no specific answer! Arrghh!
Well Ive revised most of them and yes the Bauhaus chair did come up last year so Im maybe thinking that something like the Memphis super lamp may come up but obviously I dont have a clue haha.
Im also hoping they dont come up as I dont really know a lot on many of them.
The products Ive researched are ones like you have said:
- Phillipe Starck Juicer
- Bauhaus Chair by Mies Van der Rohe
-Dyson by James Dyson
-Freeplay Radio by Trevor Baylis
- Lilly Reich
- Bic Biro pen
- Mini Car by Sir Alec Issigonis
- VW Campervan
- Ipod by Jonathan Ives
- Dieter Rams '10 things about a good design'
That's all I can think of right now but Im just praying the ones I know best I can use in my answers.
Have you got any different products and Designers you think I should know?
Thanks for all your help! I find talking to someone about the same thing helps it stick in my mind longer! -
Re: AQA A2 Product Design June examNo problem at all(Original post by BurtyB)

It helps me to
! You got good products! right now im writing out ullet points for each of my products so I remember them!
I think a good product for safety is the domestic appliances plug page 173 is a good product to learn bacause I dont think you have a product that talks about how they are designed to be safe.
Alsoooo how about a product in development in technology over the past years? I learnt about the radio, maybe you could learn an example about the telephone? MP3 player? or the TV? That all starts on page 178
You've already got lots of products though
so i'm pretty sure your covered!!

Re: AQA A2 Product Design June exam
I don't know how helpful this will be, but it will definitely be good for me.
I'm going through the book and looking at all the examiners' tips to get an idea of what to know, so I decided to summarise them on here for me and you lot. Don't know how many there is so bare with me if it's long as ****.
I missed out the Tips that apply to AS knowledge which all of should have. Below are all the AQA Examiner Tips for A2.
-You are likely to be asked how specific products can be made more environmentally friendly. You might need to use diagrams and notes for this.
-When asked to discuss a number of things about a product, for example: raw materials, manufacture, use and disposal, you might find it helpful to structure your answer under subheadings for each one (I didn't know you could do this, but that will be much helpful for someone like me who likes writing in short bursts)
-Recyclability is a key issues which you can expect to be featured in exams.
-You can expect to be asked to define what the terms ergonomics and anthropometrics mean. You should be able to label and explain anthropometric and ergonomic features of a given product.
-You might be presented with a drawing or a photograph of a product and then asked to explain how it might be improved to make it suitable for disabled people.
-You may be asked to explain, how the safety of a particular product could be improved or explain how a designer might ensure the safety of a product.
-Questions often have statements such as 'you should make reference to...'. Use this as a check-list and a way to stop yourself talking about irrelevant things.
-A2 answers need to be in much more detail than AS. You need to be able to connect function, form, choice of material and manufacturing processes.
-YOur answers to exam questions should be supported by clear line diagrams where colour use is limited Clearly a difference to AS exams
-Highlight key words in the questions as at first the question might seem wordy
-Research techniques, the information obtained and how this might be used is a significant theme in AQA exams.
-Designs inspired by nature are often a topic for exam questions
-Methods of protecting designs feature in A2 exam questions.
-Graphical communication and modelling techniques used in the design process are common topics in exam papers.
-You can expect questions that have been designed to meet environmental concerns.
-Green designs, eco-design and sustainable design are common themes for exam questions. At A2, you should be familiar with the general developments consumer products, transport and housing that have been taken place to protect the environment.
-When explaining how products change with advancements in the materials/technology you might use plastics and composites
-You can expect exam questions about safety in manufacture. You need to refer to specific processes and industries.
-Critically analyse a range of products
-It is common to be asked to compare and contrast the ergonomic and anthropometric features of several products. You could answer this type of questions using written notes and diagrams or a table can sometimes be useful Can I really draw a table instead of answering in essay form in my exam? That seems risky! It is in the AQA Examiner's tips though!
-Critically analyse how products could be designed for use by disabled customers.
-You might find it useful to practice sketching products like kettles, razors, hair-dryers etc.. Label up the ergonomic features and consider how anthropometrics might have been used in the design.
-Often you might be asked why products might be 'good design'. The iPod is a useful example to learn.
-If you learn the major advancements in electronics for the last 50-60 years, you can apply them to questions on most electrical goods.
-You should learn several examples of ICT products that have been developed with advancments in technology and software.
-You should know the differences between the different design movements and reasons for these.
-In answering questions about Modern Manufacturing Systems always refer to specific products manufactured in specific industries.
-Terminology for Modern Manufacturing Systems
I'm sorry if I wasted your time and ****, I know you could just look them up themselves.
But yeah, I put my thoughts in italics. I saw some points about doing subheadings and tables in your answer, what do you lot think about doing those instead of fully structured essay questions.
If this is true, I am really up for doing a table or sub-headings in my answers.
Let me know what you think.
! ah well, it happens >=[ !
! I kinda wish I found another way to get into Architecture, I'm pretty reluctant going to uni, because of the fees and knowing lots of people not getting jobs after it all aswell, kinda scares me XD But oh well, only time will tell
what do you think will come up in the exam! i am hoping that manufacturing and I.T will come up. Do you think it will? What about safety?
