What field of psychology should i go into?
    Hiya

I am currently looking at universities and the courses available - i am possibly going to do Psychology with Philosophy

I am also looking at the fields within psychology... but unsure as to what my interest is in!

basically i would love to care for children with developmental disorders... im intruiged at the nature v nurture aspect and how children develop the mental disorders, and whether or not they can be cured before adulthood etc... i know that is vague, but its just a basis of what i would like to do.

the "pipe dream" so to speak is to care for someone in extreme deprivation... i was learning about privation in psychology a level and i really felt as if i should help people who had the unfortunate experience of that.

so... what field would this be? as in when i get to postgrad, what course should i be looking at?

i know my mind might change about what career to do, but the above ideas have always been an interest to me n helping people is what i passionately want to do

    thankyou for the help

p.s sorry... but does the postgrad degree *have* to be a PhD? can it just be a Msc?

Developmental psychology, sounds like. Educational psychology focuses on helping people with learning disabilities in schools, although its usually social workers who help children who have had bad experiences at home. I don't really know a huge amount about this so i am probably wrong, also there probably are some sort of counsellors/psychologists for children.

Make sure that if you want to become a particular type of psychologist, that your degree is accredited. Joint honours degrees aren't always

yer, ive checked for the unis keele and hull both are accredited. seems as though if its "psychology AND philosophy" it isnt accredited, whereas if it is "psychology WITH philosophy" it is... its only 4 unis that do it anyway :/

AND implies a 50/50 split between the two subjects. WITH is more like 2/3 psych, so that's probably why

I'm going to be studying Psychology with Criminology with a view to master in forensic, and mine is a 2/3rd split, which would explain the accrediting.
It's not like you have to decide now, but you might want to consider Clinical Psychology (although an incredibly competitive area). The BPS define this as 'Clinical psychology aims to reduce psychological distress and to enhance and promote psychological well-being. A wide range of psychological difficulties are dealt with, including anxiety, depression, relationship problems, learning disabilities, child and family problems and serious mental illness' which may be of interest to you
