    Southeast Asia - ladyboys!
Forgive the misleading title. This post is nothing to do with ladyboys.

I am however backpacking Southeast Asia for 3 months, leaving in 11 days. I've got all my plans in place, but thought i'd make a post asking if anyone has anything else to recommend - i'm keen to do pretty much anything, regardless of how crazy it is (but I still draw the line at anything involving ladyboys).

So yeah, those who have been, is there anything I may have missed that you'd recommend in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam?

Can I make the suggestion of finding a ladyboy and ****ing him hard?

I'm leaving in 9 days. Can't wait. Only the month though, I expected I'd have to be here from mid-july otherwise I would have went all summer.

Serious suggestion - fried tarantula in cambodia

also this if you haven't seen this site yet

What's your plan? A month isn't very long - which countries will you be seeing?

suuure, your not interested in lady boys :wink2:

on a serious note Bangkok, just...just go to Bangkok. It will probably redefine what you class crazy as. The nightlife is completely insane and it is relatively safe plus they have a lot of day time attractions as well.

Yeah, my flights arrive in Bangkok on the 13th. I'm a tad worried about the language barrier and getting drugged and robbed in a bar by an expert thief, but I suppose that's all part of the fun.

I didn't really find the language barrier a problem, even the strippers are bi-lingual. Khao San is a really good strip with plenty of clubs that have everything from classic rock to d&b and is relatively safe (women walk home alone, very rarely see any fights ect) but yeh drug muggings do happen so always best to be cautious. But honestly the whole nightlife scene is completely epic and the risks are probably lower than a night out in London. If you're going alone you should be extra careful though as that might make you a more likely target.

keep away form the squalid tourist teeming parts of thailand, Chang Mai is more pleasant.

cambodia is an amazing place to visit, goes without saying dont accidently wander into a minefield

You know ladyboys aren't rapists or paedophiles and in Thai society they're not frowned upon it's kind of rude and silly to go over there and be like "OMG LOOK it's a ladyboy I think, teheheheheheeeeee, OMG take a picture, omg thats so gay hehehehehehe".

I've never had a chat with one (or have I????), but they're probably just normal people, I'd rather talk to a ladyboy than one of those european mega-camp faggots in a pink shirt who make sexually inappropriate comments about men who walk past them.

But anyway, my advice would be to try stray from the tourist trail because the worst places in Thailand are the tourist ones, I've just had two mates go and they've missed a whole bunch of my favourite places because they followed the typical tourist trail.

Go on lonely planet forums they'll guide you.

I never once criticised or vilified ladyboys, just that I didn't want to involve myself in any activities solely involving them. I wish people would stop taking it upon themselves to 'defend' minority social groups.

Anyway, back to the point - surely a lonely planet guide would dictate the well trodden path? I've read a lot of criticisms of lonely planet, such as that it encourages "slash and burn" tourism, i.e they promote one area for a while and within the year it has been totally destroyed by tourism, by which time people have moved on. But yeah, I agree, I don't want to go to too many tourist hot zones, so i'm avoiding Pattaya, Phuket and Ko Phangan (although the full moon party is great I will GUARANTEE you i've been to better parties and done more hedonistic things elsewhere, I have no interest in it these days and prefer to get high to contemplate the world alone rather than to induce vomiting in a tropical back lane, as it were).

The guide books aren't that amazing (I've only read two) but they can be very handy, and yes that does seem to happen. The forums however will hold a few well travelled members that know all the hidden beauties, it can be quite hard to squeeze these locations out of them because they don't want to tell millions of people to go there.

well you never know you might have time at the end? While 1 month is very short for SE-Asia 3months of anywhere is a rather flexible time frame which should allow you to do most things that the money enables you to. Singapore at least is just a cheap flight away and can be done in a couple of days easily...or so I hear

Yeah see I was suposed to be off to the US-of-gAy in mid-august to study for a year so I planned on being back in july for a month of work to save up then pack and fly off again. However I ended up not going sadly.

Weather wise its variable, Bangkok is hot and sticky ATM with frequent heavy showers. The east coast Thai islands are pissing down (well they were two days ago at least) as its monsoon season. Bangkok is probably my favourite Asian city, it feels more relaxed and safer. The trains can get you anywhere as can buses if you manage to figure out where they go! Khao San is the main backpacker strip and is pretty much within walking distance of the main temples and the palace.

The one thing I say you HAVE to do in Bangkok is go to Chatuchak weekend market, you can find things you don't even realise you need all at super cheap prices, haggling is still advised though! Don't expect real designer labels on clothing ofc unless it's the vintage second hand clothing, if you look hard enough you find something legit.

Cambodia is hot with showers in the evening. The Mosquitos in Cambodia are villains as well. Tip for Siem reap, when doing the temples I would skip the Rolous group, they aren't very big and the cost of the tuktuk isn't worth it. Umm... At the moment it's a low tourist season so you won't see as many people as you would because it's the rainy season. Cambodia is beautiful, the Angkors are amazing, waterfalls and more ruins and museums and also good night life. Im already planning my next trip and I just got back!

Just go with the flow, it's the least stressful and least traumatic way of travelling around Asia.

And you can do Singapore in a DAY, maybe two if you want to go to Sentosa island and spend all your money at universal studios.

If you have enough money just get it. Better safe than sorry! I don't think I have hep. A, I think i got
The hep. B jab. Can't really remember. I should have got rabies as well because in SEA there are quite a few stray dogs although they leave you alone most of the time.
