Re: Why is intelligence punished???I figure rasputins ideas on sex can be applied to modesty. Behaving in an immodest way rids one of the desire to do so and so makes one modest.(Original post by Brutal Chav)
No. Intelligence is respected as long as it's mixed with a bit of modesty.
Also, how you say people get bad press for getting high grades - that doesn't mean intelligence is frowned upon, it means grades are frowned upon.
AHAHAHAHA IM CLEVERER THAN ALL YOU THICKOS. IN YOUR FACE! AHAHAHAHAAAA
^ just working on my modesty there.

Re: Why is intelligence punished???We all know someone like this.(Original post by Deep456)
It's the way you come across and how you tell people your grades. If you tell them your grades when they themselves ask you, obviously you aren't bragging. However, when you know you have done miles better than someone and ask them to rub it in their face, that's different. -
Re: Why is intelligence punished???
From my experience the only people who mock intelligence are those who are not intelligent themselves. Normally unskilled/uneducated workers who have have created no prospects for themselves by undertaking an education and so they feel the need to deride those who are intelligent; just to make themselves feel better. These people generally stagnate in the holes they have made for themselves so I couldn't care less about them.

Re: Why is intelligence punished???Intelligence isn't "punished in society". Intelligence is a positive trait, which can lead to wealth, good health, a more fulfilling life. Having any positive trait makes people jealous of you, hence there are going to be negative comments due to jealousy. That's human nature. It's the same as a good looking or very popular person attracting negative comments. This combined with some people's current attitude of getting everything on a plate without much work means that some people see intelligent people/ people who work hard (which are not the same thing!) as a bit of an oddity.(Original post by Octohedral)
...
But society isn't "punishing" you, intelligence still means you're more able to access many positive things in society which others don't. People without intelligence or work ethic are generally worse off, and those negative reactions are just the product of human nature + our current society. And frankly, who cares? -
Re: Why is intelligence punished???Cool(Original post by Negaduck)
I got 3 A's without doing any real work... Does that make me cool or uncool? I DON'T UNDERSTAND.
Nobody should begrudge someone their good luck.
I promise you you are misunderstanding my point. It's probably my fault for not explaining it properly though(Original post by Aeschylus)
I'm very British and would never bring up my grades, even when asked. I feel that you wish to bring them up because you did well. This comes under a larger umbrella of people wanting to show off about what they have done well in, in that someone wants to boast about they time they've run, or the car they've bought. And I wouldn't say school has abolished that idea - unless you go to a remarkably 'avant-garde' school
Originally it was that intelligence / doing well academically isn't given the emphasis it needs in schools, particularly state schools. There is an entire negative culture around it that I think we need to abolish. The negs on TSR were just an example, albeit a petty one. The part about arrogance just came when I felt people were using it in the wrong context, as a word they've been programmed to bring up when someone mentions they've done well. If I cared about people knowing my grades I would have put them in the OP. What I wanted to do is highlight that our society has the wrong priorities.
Edit: But I admire your 'Britishness'. You're allowed to disagree.

Re: Why is intelligence punished???
By the time you end up sitting proper exams (GCSE's onwards), everyone's grown up and the "Lad culture" sort of disappears. Rather, people consider you slightly differently if you're clever (not in a bad way) so i'd say there's nothing wrong with being the geek in the class. And even if they do laugh at you, you can laugh at their results sheet on results day...

Yes.
Like saying people who insult the attractive aren't attractive themselves. Well duh. -

Re: Why is intelligence punished???It goes both ways, people who get E's can be "mongs" too. There are also people who get A's who are somewhat modest. There are some people who get a lucky "A" but that's usually not the case (ALTHOUGH it can happen). As for your next point, I'd really doubt someone can fluke 3 or 4 A's without having any common sense, besides if they genuinely do not have any common sense then they won't succeed later on in life until they do develop some common sense.(Original post by Jim-Jam)
Thing is, people who get A's can be mongs. I know people who get A's and they just have no common sense whatsoever or they aren't clever generally AT ALL.
So therefore you can't even judge everything on exam results so it's all petty bull****.

Re: Why is intelligence punished???
I get where the OP is coming from. On results day in March, people asked me what grades I got and I told them but was told I got those grades because I was 'brainy'. They were all just as clever as me, I just put more effort into revision. I worked very hard for those grades and hate being told that I got them because I'm just naturally clever.
I also tend to avoid asking people how they did in their exams on results days as once you ask them, they ask you back and I don't want people to think I only asked them because I wanted to brag about my own grades and not because I genuinely cared how well they did. -
Re: Why is intelligence punished???Actually, I think it often does. Ignoring clinical depression for the moment (something often correlated with intelligence), if you are intelligent then you can usually at least do better in a bad situation than less intelligent people, and you tend to be better at taking a philosophical point of view - the majority of people on Jeremy Kyle (not the best representation of the poulation(Original post by Kiss)
In my experiences, intelligence may bring you 'rewards' but it doesn't guarantee you happiness.
) could have solved their social problems (not necessarily the economic ones) years ago with a bit of common sense and maturity.
Of course, this kind of intelligence isn't about getting 3 As at A-Level. -
