Why do they call me Ethel?
There's a group of girls at my sixth form that call me Ethel whenever I walk past them. Why !?!?!?
I walk past them and one or two of them smile and say 'Hi Ethel.' In a kinda smug way. but not nastily. My name is nothing like Ethel and only shares one letter with it.
1) my name is not Ethel
2) one of the girls is in my psychology class so should know my name after 9 months with her
3) Every time they say it, I tell them what my name is and they go 'ok'.
Just
It happens maybe once a week or so cos it's a big college so I try and avoid them. It's rather annoying but just silly.
What should I do/ would you do?
I don't get angry at them - that would ammuse them and is probably what they want.Last edited by Clare~Bear; 02-06-2012 at 10:15. -
Re: Why do they call me Ethel?I am a year older than them - maybe nearly two years. I might not be the msot fashionable person, but I don't dress like an old person.(Original post by tory88)
Ethel is a name some would associate with an old woman, so maybe it's a comment on your mannerisms or the way you dress. If you don't talk to them much anyway, I doesn't matter just smile at them and walk by. -
Re: Why do they call me Ethel?
If you keep telling them your real name, they'll see that you care
One way would be to pretend your name is Ethel (i.e. respond to it next time), but call them by other random names and pretend you thought those were their actual names. If it carries on, make sure you stick to the same names, however much they correct you. Make sure not to be smug/bitchy about it, just act as if you thought those were their actual names. -
Re: Why do they call me Ethel?Might give you an idea(Original post by xoxAngel_Kxox)
Groups of friends sometimes have private jokes that make absolutely NO sense, but probably mean no harm either. Take it from someone who's best friends used to call her "Jizz" for three years. Never did get an explanation for that. -
Re: Why do they call me Ethel?I've seen that before.. I'm well aware of what Jizz MEANS, I'm just not entirely sure what I did to deserve being named after it got quite so long!(Original post by sarcos)

LOL. What a great suggestion(Original post by Add!ction)
Do the same back. Call them names like Bernard or Gertrude.

Re: Why do they call me Ethel? Then it will probably be due to your mannerisms. I have a friend who we call beatrice because he acts like an old woman - shuffling around hands clasped in front of himself with a very quiet, timid voice.(Original post by Clare~Bear)

Re: Why do they call me Ethel?Do exactly this! There is a girl on my campus who calls me by a completely different name (I have a huge history of nicknames and it seems no one ever calls me by my name) and so I simply started shouting a really horrible blokes name at her every time I saw her approaching. It works, and now she bows her head in defeat whenever she walks past without saying a word. Yeah.(Original post by Add!ction)
