My parents won't be supporting me financially. Can I still go to uni?
I am hoping to apply to uni this year when my AS results have come through. However, my parents will not be supporting me financially. The next problem is; I don't have any savings at all.

I was hoping to move from the south to the north to get into Sheffield university. Will the loans available to me allow me to pay for the tuition fees, stay in halls as well as go out regularly?

Or does the only people that go are the ones who's parents pay for anything..

My dad died ages ago and it's just me my mum and my brothers, she only earns like £15, 000 a year and has many bills therefore, is unable to support me...

Yes, you can. Your tuition fees would be paid for you, the maintence loan would cover your accomodation, i think you could get a maintenence grant as well, and possibly a bursary from your uni. All these together would cover your costs, although if you want to have enough money to go out a lot you should probably look at getting a part time job.

Yep! My parents don't support me either, it's harder but do-able. Just budget! And look for a part time job/ summer job, you'll be fine!

I won't be getting help financially, but I still intend to, even if it means eating baked beans for three years

You should find that the Student Finance package is quite favourable and check your Uni for bursaries. In fact you could end up being quite a bit better off than students whose parents earn more but still find it hard to contribute.

My parents don't give me any money but I'm getting on just fine
You'll get your tuition loan, a maintenance grant and loan and possibly something from your uni. You'll have to be a bit careful with budgeting though and look carefully at accommodation options. At my uni the cheapest halls is more than my student loan and grant put together in the first and second terms! You can also try and get a part time job - I like the fact I don't have to worry about my spending as much and can treat myself!

    Get a part-time job.

And be sure not to help your parents when you're earning loads!

Yes. All tuition fees are paid by loans for everyone, regardless of income. You don't need to repay them until you are earning more than £15,000/year. It's essentially a slightly increased income tax, and not an impediment to going to university.

    stay in halls
Depends where. In some places (London) you will not be able to stay in halls after the first year, and renting will probably not be affordable just on the state support. In Sheffield, it's probably much cheaper, but google the price of houseshares in the area.

as well as go out regularly?
This should not be a factor in your decision.

Did your parents buy you that?

edit: Seeing as this is in finance and accountancy, why not just apply for an accountancy job straight from A level? They will pay you to train.

you'll be in a much better position than alot of students seeing as you will be able to get the full loan/ grant. Some people don't get this and their parents arent in a position to help them out.

I was in this situation. Admittedly this was prior to the fee increase and I'm not sure how much the value of maintenance loans/grants has changed.

Effectively when I went it worked as follows:
    - Tuition fee loan paid off the fees
    - Maintenance loan roughly paid my accommodation
    - With the remaining maintenance grant I had about £50/week. Once you account for buying books at the start of the year it becomes £40/week or so. I used to spend about £20 of that on a week's shop. It doesn't leave you loads to go out, but if you want to do that you'll need to get a job.

I lived with people that had all their accommodation and bills paid for them and still received their grant. It taught me well. They were constantly overdrawn and I always had cash in the bank if I needed it. It really stood me in good stead when I left uni and moved into my flat as I knew how to budget well with my salary.
