What am I doing wrong?
I've been seeking part-time employment for almost a year now to see me through college, to help with travel expenses & the like. No matter how great I think my application is, I get absolutely no where. I understand our country's current climate but I find it hard to believe that a young person, like myself, with decent starting qualifications and a willingness to work can not get employed at all. I know I sound naive and 'poor me' but I'm sure plenty of other people are in my situation.
I've tried the big high street stores and my local shops but zilch. I've gone into shops, in person, handed in my CV and I can guarantee 9 times out of 10 they say 'We'll be in touch'. I went into my local Clark's on Thursday, as they were advertising for a part-time sales assistant. Went up to the till, enquired about the job and they said 'We're not recruiting at the moment'. I said 'You're advertising in the window' and she said 'I'll have to speak to my manager'. WHAT?! Ludicrous.
Feel free to vent your anger, share your experiences or any tips that may help. -
Re: What am I doing wrong?Try doing some voluntary work for a few months to gain experience you can talk about in your CV. I did this and got several job offers straight away.(Original post by allthelove)

if you put down 'no experience' then you are a dumbo.
c'mon dude, LIE LIE LIE!!
if they ask for references put down 'available on request' and give them a close friend's number who can pretend to be your past employer.

Re: What am I doing wrong?I've just applied for some voluntary work in my local RSPCA charity shop. Hopefully, the experience will go towards some employment(Original post by needingsomehelp)
Try doing some voluntary work for a few months to gain experience you can talk about in your CV. I did this and got several job offers straight away.

Re: What am I doing wrong?
Yeah, voluntary work is definitely the way forward. Charity shops are great as well because they give good solid retail work experience.
As for "LIE LIE LIE". That's an awful idea, if you say you've got work experience & you really don't then you'll get found out eventually, especially if they ask you questions about it in an interview. -

Re: What am I doing wrong?
Just got my first part-timer job at McDonalds, after an application that I submitted, at the beginning of march, totally forgot about it, until I got a text saying to check my e-mail at mid-may.
With me being at college, it was hard for me to get a job, due to flexability, but your best bet is to probs get yourself in some hours at your local charity shop, they sometimes also do training there too, such as NVQ's etc, so you can learn in retail and gain something for it.
And lying, never really became a prospect for me, then again I'm from the north, it's "hard" to get a job, but I dont think i'll need to lie about experience. -
Re: What am I doing wrong?
If you are anywhere near an outbound call centre, it's pretty easy to get a job in one calling on behalf of charities and things like that. Though they are very temporary though when I worked in one I earned a nice bit of money out of it even though I was only there for a month. Sign up with agencies too!
Good luck!

Re: What am I doing wrong?I say the same thing to everyone with this problem: McDonalds! Their training is recognised as some of the best in the country, so it will be nothing but good for your CV. They are constantly hiring and most of their staff have no prior experience. Good luck!(Original post by allthelove)

In my place of work we are not allowed scissors encase a robber uses them as a weapon. Personally if I were to hold somewhere up Id bring my own weapon and not pin all my hopes on the company stationary but hey.
