Jobseekers before starting uni?
Does anyone know if it's possible to sign on to Jobseekers Allowance in the summer between college and university?
I was on JSA for a few months before starting college as well so they've already got me on file. I'm 20 so noone's getting tax credits for me so that's not an issue.
I've only conditionals for September 2012 i'm not actually enrolled with any universities yet so i can't think of any reason why they can deny the application but i can't find a pile of info on the web that applys to my situation either.
Anyone been on JSA the summer before university and knows what sort of things they'll be saying? I don't really want to reapply but i haven't a job, not for lack of trying, and i have zippo money to keep me going until September. -
Re: Jobseekers before starting uni? Will JSA Getting added onto the Student Loan?(Original post by Origami Bullets)
As you've left one educational institution and not started at another, you currently count as being unemployed, so yes you can claim JSA. -
Re: Jobseekers before starting uni?
You can absolutely go on the dole before university. I would actually try for jobs at the beginning, as 3 months is quite a time, but when it gets towards the end of the summer it gets a bit farcical. Don't tell them you're going to university though, dole offices up and down the country are getting stingier since the cuts and will now apparently use any excuse to junk you.

Re: Jobseekers before starting uni?Your question doesn't make a lot of grammatical sense, but I assume what you are asking is either(Original post by helpmekid)
Will JSA Getting added onto the Student Loan?
a) will I have to pay back JSA in the same way as I do a student loan? The answer to that is no - you don't have to repay JSA.
b) can I get JSA at the same time as I am getting a student loan? The answer to that is no - you can't get JSA whilst you're a full time student. -

-- Do JSA get added onto National Insurance or anything else? I.E - If i claim JSA, in the furture will i have to pay it back ? from NI or i dont know from somewhere?
Thanks -
Re: Jobseekers before starting uni?Your JSA never has to be repaid in any way. You will continue paying the same tax / NI / student loan etc. rate as you would have done if you had never claimed JSA.(Original post by helpmekid)

Re: Jobseekers before starting uni?Your JSA never has to be repaid in any way.--- So If person A Claims it for 2 weeks and lets say get around £80 and then in Wins a Lottery and get £1 Million, Do they have to pay it back?(Original post by Origami Bullets)

Re: Jobseekers before starting uni? It's funded through NI, and the idea of NI (hence the name) is that it's like an insurance policy that you claim on if you ever need to eg if you become ill and use the NHS, or have children and send them to a state school, become unemployed and claim benefits. As with regular insurance policies, any payout is given to you so that you don't have to pay it back - it's not a loan.(Original post by helpmekid)

The nearest things it has to catches are that
a) it's not enough to live on
b) you actually have to be looking for work actively
c) you have to visit the jobcentre once a fortnight -

Re: Jobseekers before starting uni?
Isnt this a Scam? These "Free" benefits are really not free.
When applying you need to give a NI Number? Therefore if i claim lets say £100
in 3 -4 years? if i get a Job? i would have to pay back more in NI? or lets say my state pension may be cut right?
or am i wrong? -
Re: Jobseekers before starting uni?
Wrong. Every working person over a certain threshold pays tax whether they've ever applied for benefits in the past or not. If you're eligible for benefits, you're entitled to apply. There are no catches, the only obligations are those set out when you sign up, attending meetings and applying for a certain amount of jobs every week etc.

Re: Jobseekers before starting uni?Imagine you were living alone and got made redundant... How would you pay the bills/rent/buy food etc?? the government has a duty to ensure people can live at a certain standard, the money is there for food/bills so it's not exactly free money, it's there so people can live when they don't have a job.(Original post by helpmekid)

Re: Jobseekers before starting uni?Nope.(Original post by helpmekid)
But since there are taking the NI, surely they will reduce my state pension in the future? -
Re: Jobseekers before starting uni? No(Original post by helpmekid)
What about , charging higher in the NI?
