Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good? How often does it disconnect?(Original post by SleepySheep)
I'm on TalkTalk. I wouldn't describe it as 'good', but it does the job (most of the time). It's free though so I can't complain.
if it does that is.. -
Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good? Or BT?BT are expensive, but you can guarantee somewhat decent service, and TalkTalk in most cases, rely on BT to fix most of their issues, and set up Fiber.(Original post by Abed1993)
Is TalkTalk Broadband good? Or BT?
Anyone here on TalkTalk?
Their broadband is very cheap and i was wondering if they're any good?
What about BT?
TalkTalk are good, but it depends on your area. My street is perfect with TT, but my friend on the other side of town and his friends on that street hate TT, drop outs etc.. The other problem is the Router's you get with TT, they suck. Echolifes? You can't even setup a port-forward 'range'. HomeHubs are rather good, I prefer them to TalkTalk Echolifes.
I would suggest looking at http://www.samknows.com/broadband/index.php for some information on your local exchange, if talktalk flags up as "LLU" that means they have their own equipment in your local data exchange, rather than renting it from BT and reselling.
Good luck. -
Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good? Or BT?I've had both in my time. TT is not good but its cheap and cheerful and does the job. Terrible customer service if something does go wrong though have been getting better over time. Remember to cancel paper statements as you're charged for them. Slows down, disconnects once or twice a day.(Original post by Abed1993)

BT was not much better to be honest and there were lots of hidden charges and attempts to put new charges on all the time without properly explaining things. Slightly better customer service but not worth the extra money. For what they charge I'd expect something much better than TT and it wasn't. Still got regular drop outs and twice had two days without internet at all. Pretty awful considering the cost.
None of the services seem to deliver the speeds they advertise and in my area at least are much of a muchness. Make sure you stay on top of all of them in terms of billing etc. So given this my own view in the end was I'd take the cheapest.Last edited by catoswyn; 03-06-2012 at 13:47. -
From personal experience and from working at Carphone Warehouse, TalkTalk is a 50/50 type thing. Friend of mine had it wired - and it was ok. But wireless wasn't ok at all, and that was using an uprated router.
I've also had customers come into me threatening me with legal action because the company (not me) sold them TalkTalk. I had an instance of a customer quitting talktalk and still being charged for services 15 months after they quit. When they got rid of the direct debit they started sending notices and blacklisting the customer for not paying their bill even though they quit TalkTalk 15 months ago.
I'm not saying this will happen to you, but from personal experience, talktalk aren't the best company to deal with. In terms of service quality - it's average.
BT are ok, especially with the range of fibre optic Infinity that they are pushing out. Try them out. I think they have a 90 day trial now.

Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good?Mine disconnects most days for a few seconds or so at a time... or slows down periodically.. usually after long use. I use it mainly via wi-fi. But this is no worse than BT was to be honest and BT disconnected once or twice for a day at a time which TT hasn't ever done.Last edited by catoswyn; 03-06-2012 at 13:53.

Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good? Or BT?
For me, TalkTalk is a nightmare!
We were originally on Tiscali, which then got took over by TalkTalk. Decent and good download speeds.
THEN TalkTalk talked (ba dum tsch) us into having them for phone calls as well. DOESN'T WORK. Now whenever the landline rings, the internet shuts down for at least half an hour, which is a nightmare.
We got conned into paying an additional £30 fee as well, and now if we want to leave its gonna cost us even more just to get out the contract. -
Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good? Or BT?
WEnt with Sky last year, was okay. With Talktalk this year. Awful. Wifi is reliability and strength doesn't cover half the house. I used a cable to the router with my PC and it is still slow to buffer. Slow for gaming. Generally takes 4-5 hours to download a short film (80minutes). Trying to load a short youtube video in the evening is impossible.
Have BT at home, better router, better speed, but not as reliable, regularly drops connection with DNS problems and takes 5 minutes to reconnect.
I would still go with BT over Talktalk though. -
Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good?Hmm... hard to answer because that depends on lots of things. The past week for example it has not disconnected once. But no one else has been online in my house this week because they are away. The internet tends to be slower and disconnect more often when other people are online too (obviously). I would say it disconnects every couple of days, but you usually only need to switch the internet off and on to sort this out. Sometimes it takes longer to sort itself out though and this is extremely annoying (I would say this happens every month? Very random guess though because obviously I don't measure how often it happens
It could be less often than this). I find the internet also ****s up a lot when people are on the phone. Often it disconnects completely and I have to wait til the phone call is over, then disconnect and reconnect (my phone is also with TalkTalk).
If you just want basic broadband, go with TalkTalk. Don't pay a ****load more for only slightly better quality- there's no point. But if you want decent speeds and can't handle a bit of buffering now and then (
) then obviously TalkTalk is not for you.

Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good? Or BT?
TalkTalk are horrendous. Just trying to get through to their support team is a Herculean effort in itself - prepare to be on hold for half an hour at a time, and then having to explain your problem slowly and repeatedly and get no ultimate solution.
I switched to Plusnet to save money and can't fault them at all. Reliable wireless connection, speeds that are genuinely "as quoted", and very efficient support both online and over the phone. I'm a happy bunny

Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good? Or BT?No it won't... If using the landline breaks the internet then the service is faulty and they'd either have to fix it, or let you out of the contract.(Original post by harufi)

Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good? Or BT?We already rang up and said that ages ago, and they refuse to let us out the contract or fix it until we try new router, new socke-thing-that-sorts-wires-out. We just spent £120 on a new router that worked brilliantly for 2 weeks, then as soon as we swapped to TalkTalk full package, it stops. We've already tried new wires, doesn't work, but they refuse to do anything until we buy a new router - be nice if they'd pay for it.(Original post by callum9999)

Re: Is TalkTalk Broadband good? Or BT?Well as spending £120 on a router is ridiculous to the extreme (even if you didn't want to shop around, you could just walk into Comet and pick one up for £35...), are you sure you are actually doing what TalkTalk are asking?(Original post by harufi)
