Re: Living costs in LeedsI am thinking yes, but only if you can find the right accommodation. I have been doing a lot of research, and it does like it can possible, as long as you don't go out every night of the week and blow tons of money at the pubs.(Original post by jo_azevedo)
I am applying for Leeds too (School of Engineering). I am in the same situation, bringing my wife with me. So, is it possible for a couple to live with 1,000 per month (accommodation, food, transport, etc)?
Are you looking for housemates or do you want to live along with your wife? The former can be tough to work out. -
Re: Living costs in Leeds
The issue is that the licence landlords have in student areas legally allows 1 person per room so you will be paying about £250 each. You could look a bit further out and at professional houseshares.
We paid 260 each a month on 2beds of a 3 bed flat and had issues with noise so the extra 30 is of little concern. The quality of the city centre is also much better than hyde parm
there are find a roomate websites and 2 bed flats are less than 700 sometimes. We looked at aspect 14 that has 2 beds
Good luck. You will love leeds its a great city. After 4 yeara undergrad im signed up for 4 more postgrad. -

Re: Living costs in Leeds
We have found one, with two other people, and because the house technically has four bedrooms, it works out. My only issue is the slow response time of landlords makes me nervous that they backed out. Do people not have smartphones with email on them in the UK? A week or more response time is crazy. The house is 8 Beamsley Mount, LS6 1LR.

Re: Living costs in LeedsCan you ring? Use skype? Landlords answer much quicker by phone than by email.(Original post by BryanUsrey)

We tried this morning, but stupid me forgot how to dial UK numbers in the US. So I will do it tomorrow. Got our visas in the mail today, so that was a positive thing.

Re: Living costs in LeedsDear Friend I have the same situation like you.(Original post by BryanUsrey)
I really don't want a loan, as I've been saving for years to ensure that I don't have to get one. If I can keep it to 1,000 per month, I'll have 9,000 extra for fun or random expenses.
So, it seems that because I am bringing my wife with me, student landlords are charging me for two rooms, which I can understand. I have found one place for 520 per month with 40 or so in bills per month. Would that work to stay under 1000 with food and other extras, or would I be pushing my luck to far?
I'm married and I will travel LEEDS to study PhD. According to your opinion can I find 350pound per month house? I can't shre any thing with others and I seek a private house? can we manage a month with 800 pounds including bills council tax and other costs? -
Re: Living costs in Leeds(Original post by covahk)
Hi,
I'm an international student coming to Leeds this Sep. I'm estimating my budget.
Anyone can give me some ideas on the monthly living expense in Leeds?
I'll apply for Halls and probably will have £300 left each month to cover food/travel/household goods, etc. Will this be enough?
Any advice will be helpful.
Thanks
It depends which halls you apply to. If you go to the ones which are quite far out like Boddington or Oxley then you would need to factor in the cost of bus travel (like an annual pass).
In terms of food, if you hold off from buying lunch every day and take your own/go back to halls to eat you can eat plenty at £25-£30 per week.
You can have a great night out about £20, including entry, drinks, taxis and maybe a pizza on the way home. If you pre-drink before going out then you will save on drinks when you get there
In terms of being savvy, you can buy some of your stuff at the cheaper shops - sweets and chocolate from Poundland, washing powder from Wilkinsons etc. Then buy everything else at the supermarket.
