Re: Muslims -If you could end one conflict today- which would it be?
There's too many to just pick one.
The one in Syria would be obvious because of the amount of deaths being caused, but then there's the Palestinian one which has been going on for ages then there's all these Sunni-Shia conflicts in places like Iraq and Pakistan then there's the Chechen insurgency though I don't know much about that or even if it's still going on.
Just seen your poll..Last edited by Dhaal_Chawal; 03-06-2012 at 14:08. -
Re: Muslims -If you could end one conflict today- which would it be?
I find it troubling so many are picking Palestine. There are far worse conflicts that would be better to end if one could just snap their fingers to bring it to an end. For example if the death rate in Syria keeps on rising it will pretty soon eclipse the death toll of the Palestinian conflict. Just because its the longest running one does not mean its the worst. Obviously it seems wrong to have a pissing contest of death but if the OP asks people to make a cold calculated judgement that's what you have to do.
Israel Palestine: 13,000-14,000
Syria: Likely over 9,000 the opposition puts it at 14,000
Chechnya: 14,000 fighters dead according to Russian government.
Iraq Between: 14,000 and 34,000 may have died in 2006 along due to sectarian violence
Kurdish Turk conflict: An independence estimate claims 18,000 dead (from wiki could't find a decent source.)Last edited by Aj12; 03-06-2012 at 15:25. -
Re: Muslims -If you could end one conflict today- which would it be?
Hard to say, almost all wars/conflicts have something to do with western intervention, or extreme secularist/atheist leaders etc.
Don't think it would be in the west's best interest if conflict in Muslim lands ended.
Actually it's only in the past 50 years that the west somewhat was able to match up.(Original post by rocco94)
We in the west can only claim to have made these rights accessable in the past 100 years. Ironic isn't it.Last edited by Perseveranze; 03-06-2012 at 18:06. -

I would suggest that the majority of those conflicts and the others i mentioned ( phillipines, shai vs sunni etc) have nothing ot do with the west, the only thing they have in common is they all feature muslims.
Also interesting that so far the Sudan african- arab conflict has received no votes ie muslim opinion is it is not bothered with by far the most bloody and highest death toll conflict of all of these. -
Re: Muslims -If you could end one conflict today- which would it be?Ahem - Sudan ? UN estimates conservatively around half a million and specualtively pver a million. multiple millions displaced from their homes.(Original post by Aj12)

How many votes has Sudan received? none i think -
Re: Muslims -If you could end one conflict today- which would it be?It's not just about the death toll though. The conflict in Syria could be over fairly quickly if President Assad is ousted from power, and that could be done if we armed the opposition or Syria's neighbours intervened. The Israel/Palestine conflict on the other hand has been going for nearly 70 years, and there's so much bad blood between the two sides that it would be very difficult to end any time soon. What's more Palestine has become a catalyst for anti-Western, in particular anti-American, sentiment amongst many Muslims. That's why, if I had a magic button that could end any conflict, I'd use it to sort out Palestine, and then use standard diplomatic or military means to end the other conflicts.(Original post by Aj12)

Re: Muslims -If you could end one conflict today- which would it be?i think most of that is misdirection , you cant blame most of the above conflicts on palestine or anti western feeling, bin laden stated many gripes witht he west aoart form palestine, if it was resloved, im sure another unrelated conflict would be used as an excuse (chechnya, paksitan afganistan etc) The shia sunni conflict has nothing to do with isreal or the west, is the longest in world history(Original post by Arbolus)
