    Student Finance Grant Issues.
Hello, i've been applying for student finance, and our family only owns between 21,000 and 23,000 a year, which makes me eligible for the grant, however, they've not offered it to me, because they say we earn too much.

This was because the HMR office say we are earning £51,000 a year, but we have never earned that much ever. Even when my parents sent off the evidence proving how much we really earn, they still told student finance we earn £51000. I have to ring them, but it's a bank holiday for the jubilee the next few days, so no one will be around to help -_-

But has anyone else had this problem, and if so what did you do?!

Without the grant i will have £600 to live on for the whole year (once rent is taken away)

To be honest, it's probably HMRC you (or rather your parents) need to contact to sort this out. SF can only go by what HMRC tell them because that is the "official" income your household has.

It is difficult to see how the HMRC have got it so wrong ... what do your parent's latest P60s say

My parents p60's clearly state that my mother partner earnt £20,000 last year, and my mother earnt about £3000... so where £51,000 has come from, none of us know!

could have been a clerical error on behalf of HMRC, e.g: £3000, written down as £30,000

    that's what i think, i think they've written £21,000 (a previous years income) as £51,000 instead.

oh, no my dad isn't taken into account, he basically doesn't earn anything.

To cut a long story short, he's a crook and constantly moving around the globe to avoid the tax man, and the various people he's 'borrowed' money from :P He's not got a permanent income, and if he does, it's usually cash in hand.

So i doubt he's been included xD Sorry for the life story (:

    we can't figure it out....

So ... were your P60s not part of the evidence sent

it sounds like a mess but a solvable one as HMRC can hardly argue with documentation that they have actually provided

p60's were sent, yes, but still they insist we earn more than we do D: i think they have just not looked at them, because at one point, SF said they had lost them!

The thing is, if HMRC have you down as having a higher income, and have told SF this, then SF will assume you have income other than that which is on the P60, or that the P60s were wrong. Your "fight" here should be with HMRC to correct their records, before you tell SF to correct theirs.

Hi. My mum had exactly the same problem. HMRC had a higher income when SF checked their data so we were offered a quarter of our entitlement. However the higher income was based on previous years and not for 2010-11. When you ring SF you are basically dealing with a call centre. After 9 attempts speaking to Tom, Ben, Sheila, Carol etc etc (different one everytime) we were getting nowhere fast. We rang HMRC who could not understand why SF were using the higher income when HMRC actually had the correct amount for 2010-11 which would have entitled me to a full grant/maintenance payment. The saga is ongoing. HMRC actually sent a letter to my mum to forward onto SF and 3 weeks later there is still no development. Apparently is has been in appeals for 3 weeks......who are now on holiday. It's an absolute shambles and if this continues we are going to lobby the Daily Mail to run a campaign to uncover the 'grant entitlement' debacle.
