    Having a bike at hull!
Well i have my student house and everything but i want to get a bike for nipping into town and back at uni however i have some reservations!

Is the city cyclist friendly and due to the bad rep is there much point of even getting a bike without getting it nicked!

Bikes are fine. Plenty of people use them everyday. Where in Hull will you be based or will you be in Cottingham? The place does not deserve the rep it gets especially the are aroung the uni. Its actully quite nice.

Thats ok then. Cott road, Newland Av, Bev road and cranbrook etc all tend to be ok. I've lived in this area foe 2 years at uni now and its fine.

Most people keep their bike in the hallway in student houses, so it won't get stolen from there.

Otherwise, a good D Lock, plus one of those Kryptoflex cables for the wheels will mean that any bike thieves have easier, more attractive targets that they will go for over your bike.

Its a nice area. If your one of those people that don't mind walking places you can get to the town center in like 20 mins if you go down newland av or one of the adjacent roads. (or just get the bus lol).

I'm guessing you're wondering where to buy one for yourself.

As Laura says, gumtree is always a good option. However, you may be able to find a bike recycling project in the area - they fix up bikes to a high standard, and then sell them on for £40-80, depending on the bike & project.

But whatever you do, don't go to Halfords.

So thanks for the good advice ^^ And to you too Laura :D

Halfords is actually a car shop! It's notorious, however, amongst cyclists, for staff who don't know the first thing about bikes (or cars, for that matter) and selling really, really awful bikes.

As for recycling projects, a quick search didn't show up much in Hull, but I did find one in York http://www.bikerescueproject.org.uk/ If you don't fancy cycling it back (~40 miles) then you can take bikes on most trains (check with the train company first though).

Ty for taking the time to provide such good information Although i'm not quite sure about something. In this bike recycling project can i actually buy a bike cuz what i saw on the site you provided only said something about a loan for a maximum of 3 months and i would very much enjoy having a bike of my own to personalize and such

I think that's just the buy back scheme - you can buy it and keep it for however long you like, but if you want them to buy it back, then they'll only do it within three months

Of course, it would be a good idea to ring them before you go to see if they have anything suitable, and you can ask them any questions you have then.

    Ooo

hull is almost completely flat which makes it an awesome place to cycle. There are also bicycle lanes everywhere. Hull is really good for bike lanes.

Because of the bike lanes, when you cycle into town you'll beat all the cars. Cycling is much faster than getting a bus. It's a nice feeling.

And in my experience, the city is as safe as any other. Most of the people that say it isn't have never been there

I'm Dutch so I used to cycle everywhere back in the Netherlands; every city with a university is crowded with bicycles

In Hull this is not the case, however, cycling is safe and motorists do watch out for you. Just go with the flow and cycle your way through hull. Unfortunately my bicycle was stolen out of our back garden (we don't live near uni) and I'm bringing back a new one this week from the Netherlands (I still prefer Dutch bikes).

In the main part of Hull yes.

Just stay away from europes biggest council estate and you'll avoid most of the crime.
