I'd love to be a singer, but I wouldn't want the fame to go with it. Advice?

Following up the comment about Kate Bush, there are other enigmatic female singers such as Sade, Enya and Tori Amos. Even though some of their songs are so catchy- or important- that they should be a permanent part of the maintsream, you never or rarely see them on the front of mainstream publications. Bush in particular is a renaissance woman kind of talent.

So don't worry about fame because, chances are, you'll secretly think that you deserve it more than you do deserve it compared to these people anyway.
Thank you, Tori Amos was the other person I was thinking of! As mentioned, these types of artists generally don't grace the covers of the tabloids, and it's largely due to a mix of different things (e.g. lack of scandal, staying out of the public eye, a larger focus on music). They're not the biggest names ever, but they're still quite well-known because of their talent.

Be a singer anyway? There are plenty of talented, successful artists that no one would take a second glance at in the street but at the same time hordes of 'singers' that are shoved in our face everyday because they are more marketable.
This. Loads of artists are not famous but make fantastic music. Just don't be 'marketable' and fame won't bother you.

Also any career path is 'notoriously difficult', if you have the drive and passion (as well as talent obv.) So don't get put off by that old saying. There are so many people in the world that every career will be competitive but there is always room for talent imho
