It's a member of the Russell Group, which is often seen to be the group of the most prestigious universities, all of whom are large and research intensive (the 1994 Group is the rough equivalent for smaller research intensive unis).

That said, it's obviously a step down from Oxford and Cambridge, who are also in the Russell Group.

Intresting, it's certaintly a top uni then. I just don't understand, despite all the above why manchester is ranked relatively low.

It's ranked low in terms of student satisfaction, not research rankings.

Why do their own students rank it low in terms of satisfaction and experience?
    - Well, it's a very large university with approximately 40,000 students. Students have not been happy with the contact time (or lack of) they get with the staff/tutors, especially in the arts/humanities based subjects.

    - I personally wouldn't recommend it, as a former student I can safely say they live up to the stereotype that they are an arrogant university who don't actually care about their students.

Thanks for the reply, i've learnt a lot from it. I was considering going there as well, what subject did you do there, and did you get much help? How are the students like, are they arrogant too? In terms of employment, would you say manchester is good?

I did a life science degree, so it wasn't too bad. I actually didn't like the layout of the university, it's spread along Oxford Road which is a very busy road, you've got schools in the area as well as the Manchester Royal Infirmary across the road. If you're looking for a campus feel university, then I wouldn't choose Manchester. The student area is a bus ride away (or 20-30 minute walk) into Fallowfield which is quite a dodgy area from what I've heard.

How long is a piece of string?

It's in the Russell Group, relatively high in the league tables and seems quite popular so I'd say it was quite well respected. Their student satisfaction rates are quite low, though, so that might be something to consider.

I really don't know why people are getting upset with what I've put, it's a fair response to the question.

Accounting and finance, do you know much about MBS? Would you say employers respect people with a manchester degree?

Gone are the days where the university you come from plays a huge role in whether you get a job. It doesn't matter where you go, get the 2.1 and do extra-curricular stuff at university, join sports teams and societies, develop yourself as a person and make yourself an asset to the university! Manchester ain't all that, if you want to go there, then that's fine. But don't be naive and assume you'll be guaranteed a job just because it's Manchester, because it doesn't work like that anymore.

well they seem to blow a lot of other russel group unis out of the water interms of international rankings. QS world rankings ranked them 30 odd in the world and 4th in the world for employment which is pretty incredible.

Manc doesn't do too well in terms of domestic league tables due to satisfaction however. If anyone can tell me about their time/satisfaction manchester that would be great as I put them down as insurance!

There are lots of international students at Manchester, having spoken to a few of them, they said by getting a ''University of Manchester'' degree, they're pretty much guaranteed a job when they go back home after they've graduated. I don't know why people jizz over it internationally ... it's not that great.

Really? Then I guess people study Law at London Metropolitan or London South Bank will have no trouble getting employed by the city's top law firms

Why are you using extreme examples?

Edit: I'm assuming these ''top city law firms'' will require ABB+ in addition to a 2.1/1st as their academic requirements. Now the chances are that someone at London Met or LSB doesn't even have ABB+, so most likely would not apply to a ''top city law firm'' in the first place.
