Why are you using extreme examples? -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?Agreed the uni one attends does have a bearing.(Original post by Politricks)
Really? Then I guess people study Law at London Metropolitan or London South Bank will have no trouble getting employed by the city's top law firms

But I thought you said the days that which University you went to mattered are gone? -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected? If you think that, then why have you started this thread? It seems like you've answered your own question.(Original post by england100)
Agreed the uni one attends does have a bearing. -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?Id have expected a random person to say that but you go there ffs(Original post by Luxray)
Its pretty good particularly for the sciences and postgrad stuff but that said its not on par to UCL or St Andrews for example.
It's MBS school is well respected and if I can recall correctly, the A+F course is seen as one of the top in the country. -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?what do you mean? that you agree with the statement but are surprised a man-uni student said it?(Original post by clad in armour)
Id have expected a random person to say that but you go there ffs -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected? How did you infer that? I meant I dont agree with it(Original post by Luxray)
what do you mean? that you agree with the statement but are surprised a man-uni student said it? -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected? You seriously think Man Uni as a whole is just as good as UCL?(Original post by clad in armour)
How did you infer that? I meant I dont agree with it -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?
I think the only thing that lets manchester down in UK leagues is its high number of places. The academics and facilities/budget is very high but they can't be too competitive with entry requirements or it wouldn't get filled - hence it's harder to get into durham for science than manchester despite the fact that durham has achieved about 1/1000000 of what manchester has in the field.

Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?how are you rating it, if it's academics or research then I would say so - the average ucas tariff at manc is probably a bit lower but a good deal of the students there will still have higher grades than a good deal at UCL(Original post by Luxray)
You seriously think Man Uni as a whole is just as good as UCL? -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?
student satisfaction. Not going to lie, the teach here in my dept. can be pretty appalling at times, despite having professors with god knows how many letters before and after their names. The uni itself though is respected, top academics and it's one of the top unis targeted by employers.

Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?I dont know about 'as a whole' but the post I was talking about said st andrews and manchester i.e. they were citing examples of uni's of that calibre, so why can't it be said that it is as good as them(Original post by Luxray)
You seriously think Man Uni as a whole is just as good as UCL?
when you say as a whole, what do you even mean -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?
To me, it's not a top uni at all.
if it was it wouldn't be ranked low.
The ' student ' satisfaction score is based on the NSS, goog it if anyone is unsure of what criteria it uses - it is ALL course related and nothing to do with how ' happy ' one feels.
All there in B&W, only deniers refute this. -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?
Attending here will definitely be a great addition to your CV, but so will any other Russell Group university/top 25 or so university. It's all about you. For that, Manchester is one of the most vibrant cities in England (the unofficial 'second' city) and there's loads of stuff you can do which would add a lot to your CV and give you a chance.
It's also been the top university targeted by employers in 4 of the last 5 years I heard (was third last year, first again this year in High Fliers) which might have something to do with the university having the largest amount of AAB+ students studying here in the country.
As others have said, its international reputation is pretty spectacular and definitely one of the institutions international students look to most outside of London/Oxbridge, so that adds to its prestige on an international level.
There's not a lot of point in quoting league tables when asking about how 'respected' or what prestige the university holds, because there's not a good way of telling the prestige of the university based on a league table which fluctuates massively each year depending on whether several students put a '4' instead of a '5' on the NSS. Prestige is scarcely quantifiable, you can only really get a sense of a university's prestige from those who are familiar with the higher education system. Considering that, I've always tended to rank universities in tiers, and the University of Manchester is probably a middle-to-high (depending on what course you're doing) second tier University. In other words, occupying the places 10-25 in the majority of its courses.
I'd argue that it's a very prestigious English university; not on the levels of Oxbridge, but not millions of miles away either. Definitely one of the more prestigious English universities. Its Russell Group status gives it that extra status too, just as Ivy League does in America - in the sense that they both contain the bulk of the country's top universities but not all of them (there are others that are equally as good/better in some respects), of course it isn't exactly the same but a comparable symbol of status in their respective countries. -

And who exactly is " familiar with the higher education system" ?
Someone like you I suppose ? A UoM student, oh what a surprise ?
You're seriously equating the the RG with the Ivies ? LOL
Half the RG can't even make the top 25 including your precious UoM, what kind of IL would that be ?
An IL that includes 2nd and 3rd rate places ?
I don't think so.
UoM doesn't even make the top 30 except for the CUG. -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?
The job prospectus form the universities science courses are in the top 5 for ALOT of subjects, I'm not an arts student so can't comment there, but they have one of the best placement programs I've seen/heard of, and these lead onto astounding employability rates after uni
And as said, the student satisfaction isn't always top but the (some would say little) stuff that is taught is generally a very high standard in terms of the content and desired by top employers.
I think the satisfaction surveys put across the wrong ideas, universities often ranking high because their student have high contact time, learning some 'cutting edge' stuff etc, whereas in many an industry these cutting edge type techniques come and go so quickly they want people who understand the 'boring' fundamental stuff.
