How much is uni of manchester respected?
Welcome to the University of Manchester forum: where prospective and current students can discuss anything about Manchester Uni.

NO, you accused me of this and that - you back it up. One cannot prove a negative.
What gun ? It doesn't bother me and I'm certainly not going there, though that must be heartbreaking to you. -

The gun comment was in regards to the gun comment you, yourself made.
I've been looking for opinions about UoM to help me decide. Since you're so passionate in your dislike I just want to know what the basis/reason for it is. I'm going by the fact that nearly all your posts are concerning this discussion in different threads.
I know the university you attend is irrelevant to the topic but I'm simply curious. So which university do you attend? -

Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?Would be hilarious if it was. Although I actually know which one he 'used' to attend. If it even is a real person. I doubt a real person would be so ignorant. However... I've spoken to Republicans...
This guy is just out for an argument, it fulfills structure in his sad life. I sit here tutting at his posts because, quite frankly, they have a certain amount of comedy value. He's been banned before but came back with a different username to exact the same purpose. He's like terminator - sent back in time to be critical of everything Manchester.
I actually quite like him by now. Like a court jester, there's never a dull moment with him around. -

I have explained to him in the postgrad subforum why UoM is good. Cuz he couldn't say anything about my hard evidence, what he could do is to keep correcting my "mistake" about Golden Triangle ( actually his mistake).Last edited by Whiskey; 07-06-2012 at 06:58. -
Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?
I can explain why UoM is well respected by employers with the following evidences.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education...versities.html
Attachment 154604
The first link can tell you that the highest number of AAB students attend Manchester, Durham, Oxford, Cambridge, Nottingham, Leeds, Exeter, Bristol, Warwick, Birmingham, Sheffield and Southampton.
The second tells you that KCL and Manc have the same percentage of AAB students, but Manc enrolled about 6000 students but KCL about 2000 students. And these students graduate recently. You can see that percentage isn't very important cuz employers use A Level scores for screening CVs and go to the unis with the largest number of good students.
For many employers require good A levels when employing graduates, they attempt to target UoM for its largest number of good students and for the lower recruitment cost. That's the UoM's selling point.
So that's the reason why UoM is the most targeted and well respected. If u think UoM is low in the table because of low students' satisfaction, u may be wrong because some uni like LSE have nearly the same score. If u think its average ucas point is low so it's not very well respected, u may be wrong for the reasons I mentioned above.
I think I don't need to mention other things such as research quality, for it's damn good.
The only thing that can be done to let UoM go up in the ranking is downsizing and stopping some low "entry requirments" courses. That's what the president is doing. But is it necessary? Employers will not give a damn to the rankings.Last edited by Whiskey; 07-06-2012 at 07:45. -

You sound like an 18/19 yo, I am a very mature student with more than a dozen years working experience mostly in finance.
First off, you must do your own research about Unis and decide for yourself. Your parents and elder relatives should also be helping you in this.
I have recently withdrawn from the Uni I was attending so I would not recommend that to you ( a similar profile to UoM,which shall remain nameless due to legal reasons, for now at least ).
I have not feelings about UoM either way other than I think it is overrated and the rankings tend to bear me out on this - like many others also.
Generally as a fresh Ug, assuming you are ABB-AAA student , without knowing your subject choice I'd seriously consider:
St Andrews
Imperial
KCL
Soton
Exeter
Sussex
UEA
This is just of the top of my head.
What I'd consider is not just the obvious names but the ones that are underrated and are making a move up the tables. Specifically course quality is paramount, so are smaller class sizes and the like, but not to the point where you are bottom picking. -

The reason I was questioning your alleged resentment towards UoM is due to most of your posts being about it and the way you come across in them. Perhaps that is just how you talk.I have not feelings about UoM either way other than I think it is overrated and the rankings tend to bear me out on this - like many others also.
Since you cite the league tables and the NSS and do not consider criticism of their metrology or accuracy as valid, what do you think about world rankings such as THES and QS? UoM certainly does better than a whole lot of British universities in them.
I agree with you here in what I see as a good way to pick. I have already gotten my offers and am currently deciding between Manchester and Durham. Both of them seem great for the course I'm going to be in despite the former's low overall satisfaction. What I'd consider is not just the obvious names but the ones that are underrated and are making a move up the tables. There may be formal proceedings so I can't comment for now.But it is not one of your choices, if it is I'll alert you somehow.
Well of course no ranking is flawless, they all have their pros and cons, but I'd choose to look at them rather than the numerous random posters, students and alumni of various universities here.
For good reason I feel they are much more biased.
I don't like the THES world ranks cause I don't see why local ranks and the NSS do not apply ?
It's like saying British people know more about Tokyo vs Kyoto university, i don't think so. The other thing is that it is too research and citation biased.
Since when is a piece of research going to improve my understanding of course basics ? How does " Unemployment amongst 35-50 y.o males in NE UK, using a Stochastic, Arch, and Garch analysis " have any direct bearing on tutors better explaining NPV's and Lump sum discounts ?
And is THES really fluent in global languages so that they can understand high level papers from Germany to Japan ? I don't think so.
At best to me they are foreigners views on UK institutions.
Of the 2, I'd choose Durham but I'd try and consider others. -

You are neither acting in a mature way, nor are you a student (by your own admission). And this job in finance. What was it, debt collection?
I think we already did when we chose to come to UoM. And the vast majority of people I know are perfectly happy with their course / uni.(Original post by PSxxx)

You're assuming that they actually know anything about universities. My dad spent his time talking about UCCA forums.(Original post by PSxxx)
Your parents and elder relatives should also be helping you in this.
The only way it's going to have legal implications is if you talked in specific detail about your case, to the extent that you could be identified from it.(Original post by PSxxx)

Who says I a not studying right now and I was a money market/ futures sales trader, not that you would have a remote idea what that is..
Who is this 'vast majority ' ? All hearsay again ? I could say the exact opposite - pointless.
Well if your Dad know nothing about uni then don't listen to him, isn't that obvious or must UoM students be taught that ?
Sorry no comment viz proceedings. -

Don't be patronising. I'm quite well aware of what the money & futures markets are, and (lo and behold) what traders do. You can't have been very successful though if it was worth your while returning to university mid-career.
The vast majority of people that I know at UoM, where I am a student. Given that you aren't at UoM, you can't know many people there, so at best you have a small sample to draw from, and at worst you're basing your assertions on league tables.
Of course it's obvious that I shouldn't listen to someone if they don't know what they're on about. It's just that you seem to believe that most people have parents who are au fait with how universities & admissions work nowadays. For the most part, they don't (even when they are university-educated themselves), and so your statement that people's parents should be advising them is obviously flawed. -

Re: How much is uni of manchester respected?
So you're a futures trader and are going to extreme lengths to complain about Manchester. Well I'm gonna guess based on unis similar to Manchester, you go/went to Leeds or Nottingham I reckon.
Oh and by the way you're a ****ing idiot, reminded me why I should steer clear of financial services upon graduation. -

Any ranking which places Imperial/KCL/Bristol/Manchester/Sheffield so low isn't worth considering really. I think most rational people would agree.
But then again I suppose once you have withdrawn from your (probably inferior in many aspects) university, you will consider applying at the University of Buckingham? Because, after all, they perform pretty damn well this year. 16th!
