    Scanning textbook
So this is the situation: I have bought a textbook and I would like to scan it and put it on my Kindle so that I could read them on the train and during holidays (don't want to put extra weight on my luggage). Would it be legal to do so provided that it will be strictly only for personal use (I'm not going to share it with anyone or use it for commercial purposes)? I know that university suggests copying up to 5% of the book, but from a 300 page book that's only 15 pages which would make no sense scanning as I could read it in 20 minutes. Also if I scanned the whole book on university library scanners, would they come after me?

    Will really appreciate some advice

you're going to scan 300 pages?! that's going to take a very long time, are you sure there isn't a digital version or CD or anything else you could bring?

well the textbook is just a bunch of papers in a ring binder, so I can just take them out and the scanner would probably scan it in 5 mins

Who is going to find out? Technically you should only photocopy one whole chapter and no more than that for personal use, but nobody listens to that, not even the lecturers. Scan in whatever you like, as long as you don't start selling it on nobody will care.

Yes. I imagine CID will be sitting in the back with electronic interception equipment and when they find out what you are scanning they will hunt you down with a dog squad. They might even be watching this thread. I advise you get in touch with a lawyer ASAP.

Come on son, play the game and have a word with yourself.
