Haha, I've got a terrier who can be a bit on the yappy side (till he gets his bark collar on, it squirts lemon scent at him if he barks. Incredibly effective!) but he's an awesome little beast, and it's not aggressive - it means he wants to play. Our last dog (another terrier) Had a good deep bark. The next dog we get might have to be a bit bigger though, we've got nearly 4 acres to let them loose in!

They probably do what most people do with small dogs, treat it like a baby and barely take it out for a walk. It's probably bored stiff and frustrated. People don't realise that, terriers especially are just as active, if not more then medium sized breeds. I don't like yappy dogs, really irritates me, but not everyone can handled bigger dogs or have the space. I also had a medium sized dog that barked at every little thing he saw and heard, though he was raised alongside a Yorkshire terrier and Chihuahua :/

You can complain to the council for noise.

One of my neighbours has a small dog and it drives my dog mad!

If the little dog is out in the garden when we let ours out, it will sense my dog being there and will bark loads, which then sets my dog off! (And my dog doesn't bark at anything apart from this dog and the odd fox!)

And our neighbour refuses to do anything about it, doesn't even tell it off or anything!

Although anyone got any hints for getting my dog to stop reacting to it? We used to just take her straight back inside again, but the little dog has started barking everytime it's let out in to the garden (literally as soon as it's let out it runs to the bottom of the garden and barks), so our dog has started barking back from the inside!

The problem is that owners of small dogs treat them like little babies, instead of disciplining them.

Introduce a bit of metaphorical steel into their training and they'd be far better, though they may still suffer from small-man syndrome..

THEY ARE THEE MOST ANNOYING THINGS I'VE EVER ENCOUNTERED!!!!

I mean honestly. Why buy them? They require just as much work as a medium sized dog which are much more 'dog like'.

Small dogs ****ing yap constantly at EVERYTHING. Why? Because they are ****ing small and therefore greatly inferior to everything else around them and they have to feel that they get their ****ing squeaky piece of **** bark across.

My neighour has a small dog it it never ****ing shuts up. I cannot go into my back garden (it has a high fence/tress etc so I cannot see into there garden but can still heard them) without this stupid dog hearing me, just my footsteps, and it goes on a ****ing barking rampage. The funny thing is if it wasn't for the fence I could easily kill this stupid little dog and it knows it, so why ****ing act hard behind a fence like a little bitch.

I moved my weights into the shed as I do every summer and anytime I go out to use them I get harrassed by a barage of ****ing insults from this stupid little dog. I just wish my dog was still alive perhaps it could could kill this little pest. In fact it almost did once. The stupid little thing (being small) was able to crawl under the fence through a hole my dog dug and got into my garden at which point my dog went ballistic, had I not been able to see this happen and intervene this dog behind me probably wouldn't be bothering me right now.
Big ones can be annoying too, my stepdad has one of each and the thing about the big one is that he can take food off the counters really easily, the little one jst kinda walks around chilling haha. Sounds like the dog isn't very well trained tbh more than it being anything to do with its size

    Maybe he's not English

You've got to give a certain amount of leeway on international forums and the like.. no sense in calling them out about it unless they're trying to start an argument in the first place!

I have a little dog (Lhasa Apso cross Papillon) and yeh she's yappy - usually when she wants to play (which is most of the time), or if she sees anybody she doesn't know (even out of the window).

However it's not because she's cooped up all the time, because she gets a daily walk of at least an hour (sometimes 90 mins or 2 hours).

We have tried to train her not to be so yappy, but not really any success with it. We've successfully house trained her from a young age, and she sits down when you tell her to and so on, so it's not that we're just useless at training, but she yaps when she's excited, it's just one of those things. She's like a little kid - gets giddy a lot.

Tis true, small dogs are yappy. Mind you, mine is still only young. She's only 10 months old. She will probably calm down somewhat as she gets older - she's already somewhat more chilled than she was when she was a few months younger. I've known some elderly small dogs that were yappy when they were young, but not so much when they got older.

My reasons for getting a small dog though are :

    a) our house isn't large enough to happily accommodate a big dog

    and

    b)
I have three small children. Whilst I appreciate that a dog of ANY size or breed can be unpredictable, if a large dog suddenly turns and unexpectedly bites a child, it's going to do a **** load more damage than if a small dog does the same thing.
Whilst I wouldn't expect my dog to do this, as she is the friendliest dog ever, I'm not stupid enough to be one of these pet owners who thinks that their dog has no chance in hell of ever biting somebody. All dogs are capable of it. I'd rather take the chance with a small dog though that couldn't kill my kids, than a big dog which could. Even labradors have been known to turn and bite children, and you wouldn't expect that of labradors either.
If a big dog with a powerful jaw turns vicious, a kid has no chance. If a small dog with a tiny jaw turns vicious, a child has a far greater chance of surviving!

    lastly

    c) small dogs cost a lot less to feed

My small dog is lovely though, I wuf my Fwuffums (Fluffy) hehe

I have a small dog Boo who I don't really pay much attention to cuz shes small and I like our bigger dogs but she don't bark like all these other little dogs you've mentioned do. Maybe it's cuz my mums used to rottweillers and German shepards so she gives Boo the same amount of discipline, trainin and love as any of our other dogs..

She's in the cage/crate cuz it was mornin and if we don't have her there she just runs upstairs to my mums too
(even with stairgates at the top and bottom)
