What should I do during my gap year?
I understand this shouldnt exactly be in this section however I wanted advice from people that have been through the scottish education system as I have.I'm planning on applying to uni with my combined 5th/6th year results for 2013 entry.(As have all other 6th years across Scotland I left school some weeks ago) Between applying what else can I do? Whenever I thought about a gap year(this one wasn't exactly planned, dont want to get into it) I thought about travelling somewhere.I'm applying for jobs in the nearest city to me to get an income, meet new people and gain skills.I could travel with money I earn, but only within Europe,my parents arent keen on the idea of me gallivanting off somewhere far flung for no other reason than I want to. I feel I need to be productive.I'm keeping up my languages as that is my chosen degree area but apart from that I'm lost...

The European limitation is silly. If it's your money, do what you like. (Within reason; obviously Somalia's not a sensible tourist destination.) Having said that, have you considered being an au pair or teaching ESOL in a country where you could practice your languages before university?

If your degree is in languages then you should definitely use this year to spend time in the native country where it's spoken! Presumably this can be somewhere in europe? Will be a massive help before you start your degree, don't waste the year staying in the Uk, although you might have to work for half the year to save up first.

I have a friend in Germany who has offered me the chance to live with her, however,I would need to work for half the year before that to afford even a couple of months with her. Would this be considered good by universities? Or a waste of my time?

I know the money is mine but my parents are quite strict(and over protective actually) I haven't considered that actually,I'll have a look around.
