Final proof that the licence fee is robberyHaving had a quick look at some of the papers today, the BBC has come in for a bit of a slating for its Jubilee River Pageant coverage. Rightly so, in my opinion. That has to have been one of the Beeb's worst performances in my lifetime.
There were a thousand or so boats on the river, most of them with interesting histories or designs, loads of them crewed by interesting people. There were half a dozen or so of them with musicians whose music could easily have been broadcast. It was all lead by a specially-made bell tower, ringing out all the way down the river.
So why oh why did the Beeb give us five hours of semi-famous uninformed airheads waffling about babies? Or cakes? Or themselves?

My favourite bit was definitely how any time they cut to Claire Barker whoever was driving the boat just hit the horn after a few seconds (presumably enough time for the delay to kick in for them to realise they were on live TV) absolutely horrible woman so made me laugh.

It's not robbery though, you automatically consent to paying it if you choose to watch or record TV as it is transmitted.
If it is theft, then it's the kind of theft that's like a little old lady welcoming two balaclava-clad lads into her home and saying they're welcome to take anything they like. -

Re: Final proof that the licence fee is robberyPersonally, I think a better analogy would be a little old lady paying for a removal company when she's moving house only to discover too late that they've nicked all the family silver. I'm paying the BBC for a service. As long as they fill their airtime with The Voice, The One Show, 'stenders and their standard of Jubilee coverage, I'm not getting that service.(Original post by AidanLunn)

Re: Final proof that the licence fee is robberyYou're paying the BBC for the right to watch live TV. You would be getting that service even if the full extent of the BBC was non-stop repeats of Jubilee coverage for eternity...(Original post by kingsholmmad)

It's just for you, it is for *EVERYONE* that pays it. -

Re: Final proof that the licence fee is robberyNo I'm not, I'm paying for them to fulfil the criteria of their charter. That covers a lot more than just live tv otherwise they'd never bother with documentaries, dramas or factual shows.(Original post by callum9999)

Re: Final proof that the licence fee is robberyThat analogy doesn't work as you analogy involves theft. Mine doesn't involve that because the TVL isn't theft.(Original post by kingsholmmad)

Re: Final proof that the licence fee is robberyNo you are not as you aren't paying the BBC, you are paying for a license to watch TV. The fact that the money is then passed onto the BBC is neither here nor there. You buy a license to watch TV and you are then able to watch TV - what the BBC spends the money on is completely irrelevant (in this context - of course they have to follow the rules, which they do - whether you like it or not, those programmes are entertainment programmes watched by millions).(Original post by kingsholmmad)

Re: Final proof that the licence fee is robberyExactly - and the TVL goes on other things unrelated to the BBC such as broadband rollout in rural areas. People don't think a broadband tax will ever be coming? Looking at what, other than the BBC, the TVL is spent on, I'd say it's nearly here.(Original post by callum9999)
