What do I need for 6th form?
Currently on study leave for year 11, I will go up to 6th form this September (2012). What will I need? I need to know everything, in terms of stationery, clothing (we no longer have to wear uniform, and as my family can barely afford necessities I have hardly enough clothes for a couple of days - I need to know what to get!), books/paper, planners etc. - everything!
Equiment: Which stationery is needed? Have you got a list? Diaries/planners? I already will get A4 lined paper pads...what else? Folders? Project books?
Girls: Clothing is a big issue for me as I find shopping difficult. I am around a size 16-18 (ish), curvy and large-chested and I always cover my arms to the elbow at least. I have low body-confidence so please don't suggest things for everyday wear that a size 8 would normally wear, but also please don't suggest baggy/sloppy clothes as they make me feel trampy. Also because of the body-confidence thing I tend to wear dark colours.
Can anyone (preferably those already in 6th form) help?

If you are doing sciences / maths / business studies / Accounting (not exhaustive) you will need a calculator, definitely scientific for the sciences and maths and also a graphical calculator is not a bad idea especially for further maths.
Obviously 2-3 pens and pencils along with a rubber, sharpener, ruler and such should be required, if your doing art then you'll probably need colours and those expensive HB specific pencils >.<
In terms of paper it varies between colleges however for most you'll need to supply your own paper so a notebook is pretty handy, also you'll definitely be given a lot of papers / printouts / worksheets so a couple folders and 1 or 2 ringbinders will also be helpful, don't forget a stapler and holepuncher either.
e: Also, depending on how IT savvy your college is, it would be very advantageous to have a printer at home as you may be set assignments online, this especially applies if your taking computing or other IT related courses.
Hope that helps...Last edited by freedomyak; 04-06-2012 at 15:41. -
Re: What do I need for 6th form?
Same
well, so far i've bought 5 folders: one for each subject plus one to take in each day. I also got som e refill pads (3 for £6 in whsmith!!) and poly pockets, as well as 50 black pens from tesco for about £3.50, as i always lose mine :/ i would take a notebook too, although this depends on whether your sixth form supplies diaries.
Non-essential stuff which could still prove useful includes coloured pens, highlighters and sticky notes to make note taking... prettier!
Clothing wise, you could get some nice dark leggings as well as lots of long sleeved, pretty tops- something like http://www.yumidirect.co.uk/women/swan-print-tunic.html with a belt and necklace. If you get loads of tops/tunics/dresses then you will look like you're wearing something different each day
Anyway, i'm pretty sure there's a tsr wiki on this....
Good luck for next year!
(p.s.- what are you taking, out of interest?) -

Re: What do I need for 6th form?
Motivation. Lots of it.
On a more helpful note, I would suggest going to poundland to buy lots of paper, and I'd take my class notes on there, and then splurge on some nicer paper if you wanna make neater notes; I did the whole neater notes thing and it ended up becoming a revision tool/ helping to clarify what I learnt.Last edited by s_axo; 04-06-2012 at 15:56. -

They'd probably tell you that you need to join a sports club for 6th form.
But really - same things are you had for Year 11. -

Re: What do I need for 6th form?
Dont buy folders and stuff until you start college - it really depends on the subject how you want to organise your notes so it's really best to wait. Also, I'd recommend getting smaller ring binders to carry into college every day, and bigger lever arches to leave at home, because it is SO annoying to have to bring in all your notes every day. I used a pukka pad to make brief notes for all my subjects (you can get these cheaper online) throughout the year, which was so helpful when exams came around. You may be able to steal paper from college, so again, don't buy too much of that, and they might give you a planner.
In terms of clothes, everyone cares what they wear for the first week, and then no-one gives a ****. No one worth knowing cares if you wear the same clothes twice in a week or something (as long as you wash them!
). At my college everyone pretty much wears jeans, so just go to primark and get some jeans and a load of strappy tops or something.

Re: What do I need for 6th form?
For clothes; I've been told that for the first week everyone makes a real effort, then after that nobody cares any more. At the end of the day, you're doing your A-levels, not doing a fashion shoot - wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I'm worried about not looking fashionable enough and wondering if people will judge me, but personally, I couldn't care less what anybody else wears and I'm pretty sure everyone else feels the same. I'd suggest some baggy cardigans, can wear them everyday, they're very comfortable and go with everything. Then, you could just get some jeans, leggings, or chinos - they're comfortable and again, can be worn everyday. Then, just any top you like really. Don't splurge out on anything significant, just get some everyday stuff. You don't want to look like you're making too much of an effort haha.
Good luck with your A-levels nonetheless.

This pretty much says everything you will need. Id also speak to your 6th form (perhaps at open days etc) to see if there is anything else you need, like things for the specific subjects you are doing etc. -
Re: What do I need for 6th form? Also, if your family cannot afford necessities, I'd recommend looking in to the bursary most colleges/sixth forms offer. My mom went bankrupt this year as I was doing AS and my bursary helped so much with supplies/ bus passes. Just thought I'd let you know if you don't know yet.(Original post by WhatLeighSays)

Re: What do I need for 6th form?
Thank you for making this OP, this will be very useful

I've just finished year 11 too so I can't really advise you on what you need but clothes wise you would wear tops/tunics with leggings, I think that would look nice. I plan to wear that or high waisted skirts or dresses with tights

Re: What do I need for 6th form?
make a mix and match wardrobe its what im doing. get 3 of everything but in very different colours/patterns/fits so that when u put it together you can have 100's of slightly different combinations. i.e for shoes get 3 pairs. one flat (black), one heeled (blue or nude), one converse (red). just think gok wan's capsule wardrobe! its easy - im starting college in sept too + on study leave atm but cos my birthday is the 9th of june im asking for clothes and whsmith gift cards!
p.s curvy size 16? = im jealous! -
Re: What do I need for 6th form? Why jealous? It's HARD to find clothes plus nothing tends to look that great(Original post by jfranks)

Retro shops, oxfam and primark r heaven for all students!

...unless they're sillios
-Forget tshirts/tops etc. Invest in two or three really nice warm jumpers-
I say this cos (i'm just finishing 6th form now) i always bought cool tshirts i saw and liked. Complete waste of time! -it's england. Most of the time u need a jumper and even then ur still cold.. So no one sees ur awesome tshirts.
Everyone seemed to b wearing the same one jumper they owned everyday- so much for the unique fashion plans.
So b cool and buy cosy COTTON jumpers!
(not acrilic- they go horrid and bobbly look cheap, not wool/cashmere cos they always need dry cleaning..)
Best of luck
