GCSE AQA Geography A (Physical, Unit 1) (14th June)
Hi. I was just wondering if anyone else was taking this exam, so I thought I'd start a thread on it.

The topics I'm doing are: The Restless Earth, Challenge Of Weather and Climate and Water On The Land.

Whilst revising what I've realised is:

    1. I find physical geography much harder than human geography.
    2. There are lot more case studies, which are very similar so it's easier to get mixed up.
    3. You can't just "blag" your answer, you have to know specific terms as it's more related to Science than human geography was.

How far is everyone into revision?

I know a lot of case studies but I'm lacking everything else. I'm sort of panicking as well because there is a lot they could ask which I haven't revised yet.

Also, what questions do they think will come up? I was thinking that because some of the case studies haven't come up, they might use some other ones, but you can never be too sure. (Meaning you have to revise them all anyway)

    Thanks.

im mainly copying out my case studies for volcanoes, tsunamis ect... and writing out the key figures and social, economic and environmental effects as my teacher said it is vital to link them.

then im going to do some standard revision around the time of the exam like definitions and charecteristics of certain things...

    past papers too

I'm doing restless earth, rocks and scenery and coastal zone.

I find physical so boring and quite hard, can't wait to get it over with. Human is so much better!

I've found making flash cards for the case studies is a lot better than writing them out on sheets of paper.

Does anyone have predictions of what sort of topics will come up? I have a list somewhere, I'll post it when I find it

These are hot topics (my teacher says):

Restless earth- earthquakes, fold mountains. Also volcanoes and tsunamis.

He told us to make sure we know LEDC and MEDC Case studies well.

Rocks scenery- weathering, chalk and clay, limestone and quarries

Coasts- coastal flooding, salt marshes, manage retreat and stacks/stumps/arches.

These are things he thinks may come up so he told us to do extra revision of these on top of the standard revision on everything.

Really? Fold mountains came up in June 2010 paper, which is why I think it is unlikely, because there are so many other case studies. And the earthquakes came up on the specimen papers - But it could come up considering it hasn't yet come up.

And I agree with what you said before Human was so much more better, at the time I though it was hard but nothing compares to how hard this is...

Do you think it's worth revising a case study for an Anticyclone?

I'm doing Restless Earth, Weather and Climate and Water on Land - I'm stressing out so much as well because like you said the case studies are very similar and it is so difficult to remember which figures link to which case study.

My teacher wrote down in order of what he thinks will come up for the case studies for each topic. Hope this helps..

    Restless Earth
    1. Volcano
    2. Earthquake/Tsunami
    3. Fold Mountain

    Weather and Climate
    1. Weather Hazard (eg. Hurricane Katrina)
    2. Global Impact

    Water on Land
    1. River Flooding
    2. Flood Management (Hard vs Soft)
    3. Named Landform (eg. Meanders)
    4. Water Management (eg. UK Reservoir)

I hope these help but they are NOT exactly certain - its just my teachers opinion. As well, I'm unsure about Weather and Climate because he has only given us two case studies. Do you know if there are anymore possible?

You're doing the exact same as me! I think the Volcano case studies is likely, as is the hurricane Katrina, and yeah river flooding is also likely. Out of them I only know 1/3 and even that is very very basic stuff. I learnt everything that came up previously, so now I need to learn stuff that hasn't come up. But at the same time, they could ask anything. Despite it being on last years paper.

It's not on my revision guide but perhaps an Anticyclones case study...? I'm not too sure though.

I also think a lot of people (myself included) are getting bogged down with case studies when there is a lot of other stuff that could come up which isn't case studies.

It's unlikely that the past questions could come up, but then again they could. We just don't know.

I'm thinking that there might possibly be an Anticyclone or Depression case study as well because I'm pretty sure there would be more than two case studies available for Weather and Climate. I hope to god that doesn't come up because they are my worst topics out of the whole of the unit

As well, like you said I think any one of them could come up because in Unit 2 in my mock exam was the case study on Sustainability and I didn't revise it because I thought it wouldn't possibly be another case study and just my luck... it did so I'm not making that mistake again lol - I ended up making loads of figures to try and get as many marks as possible

How many hours are you doing per day? Or are you revising every 2/3 days? Do you have any other exams at the same time, jw?

I know! I was revising something on Weather and Climate yesterday and I just couldn't do it, although I'd say Water On The Land is my worst topic. Also, in the exam they'll probably be a map on in a section and although I know how to do questions like that, teachers tend to teach all of the wordy stuff and forget all about the maps...

There's not that many case studies but there is a lot they could ask on them case studies I've counted 17!

Omg!! 17!! Lol - I'm doing probably about 4-5 hours a day but I haven't really done much yet because I've got my RE exam on Monday but geography is my last exam. I really need to catch up on my geography though - what case studies have you got because I've only counted up to 14 and the LEDC and MEDC case studies, I've counted separate.

I've already done my R.E exam, I'm so glad I don't have R.E there is soo much content, it's exactly the same as Geography! And yeah, Geography is my last exam as well. I'm only doing 2 hours per day, I can't do anymore than that.

Erm. Just stuff like hard engineering, soft engineering, two of the hurricanes, stuff like that. It's annoying to think out of everything only 3 will come up! Just think this time next week the exam will be over!

In terms of the other work, what topics do you think will come up? I don't even know basic stuff like destructive and constructive plate boundaries...

I think for Water on Land it'll either be one of the landforms such as Flood Plains or flood hydrographs. I'm really not sure for the other two I think it could be anything other than the case studies.

Oh and btw at school were you taught in Weather and Climate relief, convectional and frontal rainfall because we were taught these but there not in my revision guide and my revision is specific to the exam board I'm doing?

Although, I wouldn't worry so much on the first few topics because some questions are reading from graphs and maps so I think even a few that aren't doing geography could answer the first few questions.

Do we need to know Yellowstone as a case study for super volcano? It's not in the revision guide but it's in the textbook
